Job Description
The Washington Post is seeking a Front-End Engineer to join its Live News + Article team. This team of engineers works closely with product design to build new features that enhance our reading experience for live news coverage. As a Front-End Engineer, you will participate in each step of the development lifecycle from development and code review to automated testing and deployments. You will learn and apply coding best practices as it relates to accessibility, performance and responsive development. A passion for continuous learning and problem-solving is a must. This role reports to the Engineering Lead.

Responsibilities
- Understand current ecosystem by learning internal tools, workflow processes, API services, and rendering technologies
- Apply engineering best practices by following established development methodologies and standards
- Build robust solutions by evaluating, assessing, designing, and developing code to meet technical and business requirements
- Improve your code and that of your teammates through constructive, collaborative code reviews
- Educate and empower team by contributing to documentation for new functionality, production problems and their solutions, and areas wherever you identify gaps
- Ensure quality of production code by developing automated tests (unit, integration, system) and learning monitoring infrastructure
- Provide timely and effective maintenance support and problem resolution for existing systems
Qualifications
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Experienced with modern JavaScript fundamentals (coding, debugging, testing, and automation techniques)
- Proficient in React and CSS
- Experience using git to push and track code changes in a professional environment
- A collaborative spirit and ability to build strong relationships within and beyond your team
- Excellent verbal/written communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to deliver quality solutions within established timelines
- Preferred: Familiarity with automated testing tools like React Testing Library, Playwright, Cypress or Jest. Experience with Node, NextJS, Typescript
