Emory University School of Law Chief Business Officer Position: Chief Business Officer, School of Law Organization: Emory University Location: Atlanta, Georgia Reporting Relationship: Dean, School of Law Senior Vice Provost for Strategic Financial and Resource Planning Vice President of Finance & Treasury Website: Law in Action | Emory University School of Law Position Summary Emory University School of Law, a nationally and globally recognized leader in legal education, seeks a collaborative and forward thinking financial and administrative leader to serve as Chief Business Officer (CBO). Reporting to the Dean, the Senior Vice Provost for Strategic Financial and Resource Planning, and the Vice President for Finance and Treasury, the CBO will serve as a key member of the school of law's senior leadership team and will be joining the institution at an exciting period of time marked by new leadership and an ambitious strategic plan. As Emory Law continues to use thought leadership and practical training to transform the future, they need an astute financial and administrative leader to provide an effective financial strategy, drive operational excellence, collaborate with key stakeholders in delivering on their mission, and champion a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment. The next CBO will serve as a trusted advisor and strategic partner to the Dean, Senior Vice Provost for Strategic Financial and Resource Planning, Vice President for Finance and Treasury, senior leadership, faculty, and staff in developing a sustainable financial model for the school of law in support of its programmatic offerings and strategic vision. The CBO is charged with ensuring that Emory Law is an effective steward of all fiscal and human resources entrusted to the organization by its students, donors, grantors, and supporters. With the support of a team of 22 talented professionals and a budget of $65.5M, the CBO oversees all facets of finance and administration to include budget and fiscal operations, accreditation, human resources, information technology, institutional research, facilities, and financial and operations planning. As Emory Law continues to harness its existing strengths while pursuing new and ambitious goals, they seek a dynamic leader who can provide balanced financial strategies in a collaborative, innovative, and transparent fashion. The ideal candidate will be an ambitious leader who has the prerequisite experience to effectively steward resources in support of this leading law school as it boldly embraces opportunities for greater impact. The CBO must be a highly accomplished financial and administrative executive with strong technical skills coupled with a proven track record of high-level strategic planning and operational execution in higher education. Success in this role will be measured by effective financial stewardship, strategic operational oversight, and strong collaboration. Reporting to Dean Mary Anne Bobinski, Susan Bonifield, Senior Vice Provost for Strategic Financial and Resource Planning, and Belva White, Vice President for Finance and Treasury, the CBO will oversee financial and administrative functions that are central to advancing Emory Law's academic mission and strategic vision. In this highly visible role, the CBO will contribute to the strategic vision of the school of law and will serve as a key, strategic advisor to the Dean, Senior Vice Provost for Strategic Financial and Resource Planning, and Vice President for Finance and Treasury on all financial and business matters. The CBO serves as the principal finance leader for the school of law, providing the necessary vision for developing and implementing effective financial and business strategies. The CBO will serve as a trusted and collaborative partner to academic and administrative leadership to further institutional goals. Charged with driving financial and operational best practices, the CBO leads a diverse, dedicated, and talented team that includes budget and fiscal operations, accreditation, human resources, information technology, institutional research, facilities, and financial and operations planning. The Chief Business Officer will be responsible for the overall financial and business operations of Emory Law. Specifically, the CBO will: Finance and Budgeting Develop a comprehensive financial strategy that supports Emory Law's programs and strategic priorities. Ensure that sound financial systems, operations, and controls are in place to support decision making and organizational effectiveness. Strategically align resources to meet overarching priorities and objectives through effective financial stewardship, analysis, and forecasting. Assume a leadership role in the annual operating and personnel budget plan for Emory Law and collaborate with the Dean and academic leadership team in the creation of faculty hiring plans. Advise the Dean on matters associated with financial and business operations. Remain current on all university directives and policies affecting financial and administrative efforts within the school of law. Collaborate with the Office of the Provost and with financial and operational colleagues throughout Emory University. Advance the university mission and the priorities of the school of law in ways that are consistent with the institutional fiduciary responsibilities. Provide overall administrative, financial, and strategic direction for the budgetary and fiscal affairs of Emory Law, inclusive of planning, administering, monitoring, and controlling the overall financial plans, policies, and programs. Direct school-wide planning and response to the demands, costs, services, technology, regulations, and fiscal interests throughout Emory Law while protecting assets and ensuring fiscal viability. Develop and implement financial metrics and benchmarks to monitor the financial strength of the school of law. Provide leadership and participate in long-range financial planning, trend analyses, and budgeting. Develop and prepare financial, operational, and statistical reports. Finalize budgets, conduct feasibility analyses, draft business processes, and perform comprehensive operational assessments of business units. Communicate pertinent accounting structure, policies, procedures, and other financial developments to the Emory Law. Strategic Academic Leadership Partner with the Dean, Senior Vice Provost, Vice President and senior leadership on the strategic visioning for Emory Law. Collaborate with university leadership, broadly defined, including CBOs from other schools, to develop and implement process improvements and strategic initiatives. Act as an advisor to senior leadership on all aspects of finance and business strategy determining appropriate investment and resource allocation. Provide strategic oversight and ensure operational excellence in key areas, including budget and fiscal operations, accreditation functions, communications, human resources, information technology, institutional research, facilities, and financial and operations planning. Cultivate a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and welcoming culture. Develop and retain a talented, diverse, and dedicated team. Oversee the facilities planning, development, management activities, and initiatives Ensure facilities planning is consistent and in alignment with strategic priorities, operational and fiscal needs, and program objectives. Serve as a liaison to the university's Enterprise Risk Management program. Participate in the strategic planning process and in the development of operational policies and procedures. Represent the organization in external financial and business activities. Oversee, coordinate, and manage special projects as well as serve on university committees as appropriate. Instill a culture of trust, transparency, and collaboration. Professional Qualifications The CBO will be a seasoned financial leader with a proven track record in fiscal management in a complex academic environment. The CBO will lend credibility to the fiscal and business strategy of Emory Law as well as provide leadership for day-to-day financial and operational execution. The ideal candidate will have senior level financial and administrative leadership experience coupled with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to lead change in a thoughtful manner. Candidates must possess a deep and broad background in higher education finance and administration with a focus on best practices. The successful candidate will bring many of the following skills and traits: A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in business operations, finance, or related field with 5 years at a senior leadership level within a complex environment. Demonstrated knowledge of higher education finance, budgeting, financial analysis, and debt management policies and best practices. A strong business acumen coupled with the ability to lead a multidisciplinary team with enterprise-wide impact. Knowledge of current and emerging trends and strategies in higher education finance along with a proven track record of revenue enhancement. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as maintaining a welcoming learning and working environment. An entrepreneurial spirit with an openness to new ideas and innovative approaches. Knowledge of best practices in operational areas, including finance, accounting, IT, human resources, facilities, and planning. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels of an organization. Education An advanced degree is required with a JD or MBA preferred.
