Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is the Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision in performing the full range of duties associated with operating a wastewater treatment plant ranging from .04 MGD to 2.2 MGD.

- You will operate two Wastewater Treatment Plants (at MCB Quantico) which provide the full range of treatment, including that requirement meeting National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit conditions.
- You will operate tertiary wastewater treatment process including mechanical screens, grit removal system, primary/secondary clarifiers, enhanced nutrient removal activated sludge system, chemical feed system, multimedia filters and UV disinfection.
- You will perform monitor and operate wastewater treatment process controls (i.e., SCADA and telemetry) and adjust operation parameters (e.g., flow rate, chemical feed rate) to maintain optimum operational condition of wastewater treatment process.
- You will conduct required daily sampling/monitoring, meter readings and recording/record-keeping.
- You will perform operator maintenance on all equipment utilized by oiling, greasing, replacing parts, and adjusting in accordance with schedule Preventive Maintenance (PM) schedule, SOPs, manufacturer manuals, and written and oral instruction.

- At the time of appointment the operator is required to possess and maintain an appropriate Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators Certification, (Class 1 or II) from the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupation Regulation.
- Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
- This is a bargaining unit position.
- You will be required to possess and maintain a current valid United States driver?s license.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- Must be aware of how to use chemical such as sulfuric acid, sulfur dioxide, aluminum sulfate, ferric chloride and polymers in proper amounts.
- Must be able to read the digital/analog gages and meters which indicate whether or not the systems are functioning properly.
- Must be able to read, interpret and apply numerous technical publications and, operators? manuals in order to effectively manage all systems.
- Work requires lifting heavy equipment or tools. Requires considerable walking, standing on concrete and climbing stairways and ladders. Regularly lifts objects weighing 45-50 pounds.
- This position requires rotating shift work.
- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements.
- This position is considered Key/Emergency-Essential. You will be required to provide immediate and continuing support to ensure the organization/ facility continuity of operations and completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission.
