POSITION SUMMARY: The Vice President, External Relations is a key leadership position reporting directly to the President & CEO (Chief Executive Officer). The VP has the primary responsibility for building strong external relationships that advance the mission of APHSA, raise financial support, and help grow our national influence. This highly visible executive will interact with state and local leaders, philanthropy, other national associations, research and academia, private companies, and community-based organizations. The VP will serve as a spokesperson to external audiences and position the CEO and other APHSA leaders to interface with media, federal policymakers, and other key influencers. The Vice President oversees overall fund and business development through grant and contract-based work that aligns with the APHSA s Strategic Playbook and commitment to advance race equity. As a brand champion, the Vice President oversees the Association s knowledge mobilization and communication strategies to maximize the visibility of APHSA, leverage its tools and resources, and create shared learning opportunities. The VP will provide leadership support to a team of Directors responsible for communications, knowledge mobilization, and the Association s Organizational Effectiveness consulting practice. The VP is part of the executive management team. SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Major Responsibility #1: Foster and Expand Strategic Partnerships Cultivate strategic partnership opportunities that advance APHSA s Strategic Playbook and annual Action Plan by: Building and enhancing relationships with national philanthropic organizations, research institutions, think tanks, and private industry. In conjunction with the Senior Director of Policy & Practice, identifying and implementing member priorities through strategic partnerships. Supporting implementation of innovative approaches and initiatives to enhance varying member engagement opportunities. Fostering relationships with key leaders within the human services sector as well as related sectors such as education, health, housing, justice, and transportation. Ensure connectivity and knowledge transformation across partnership initiatives and APHSA bodies of work, ensuring through lines both internally within the organization and externally with members and partners. Translating ideas and insights into actionable initiatives and member-services. In conjunction with the Chief Operating Officer, oversee development of formal agreements (eg, partnership agreements, subcontracts, MOUs, etc.) with identified partners. Monitor agreements, including satisfaction of all deliverables Support conflict resolution, as needed Percent of Time Spent: 35% Major Responsibility #2 Business & Fund Development Highly connected to responsibility #1, this area of responsibility oversees APHSA s business development, including provision of technical assistance through its Department of Organizational Effectiveness, and leads fund development from non-dues resources. Develop a long-term fund development plan, including expansion of grant and contract opportunities for sustained growth of the Association. Oversee the continued growth and development of the Organizational Effectiveness practice as well as other opportunities to build field capacity through technical assistance supports to members and partners. Oversee development of new tools and services that build the capacity of the human services field. Percent of Time Spent: 25% Major Responsibility #3: Advance Brand Identity Build and promote APHSA s brand by: Providing oversight of planned communications for APHSA, including the development and execution of a strategic communications and marketing plan. Designing proactive media approaches. Support effective and innovative use of communication channels, including digital and social media; in-person events; as well as video, audio, and web-based platforms to highlight member-driven innovations and mobilize the transfer of knowledge to leaders in the human services field. Lead internal processes, including use of data analytics, to track recognition of and satisfaction with our value propositions, including consistency with our brand identity. Percent of Time Spent: 20% Major Responsibility #4: APHSA Staff and Team Development Provide coaching and supervision to the departments of Organizational Effectiveness, Knowledge Mobilization, and Communications. Provide leadership support to functional teams that work across departments. Work collaboratively with APHSA s Executive Team to cultivate a high-performance work environment that demonstrates APHSA s core values and advances a culture of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Support optimal teaming and continuous learning for staff members. Percent of Time Spent: 20% REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience Minimum of 10 years senior management experience in Human Services or related field. Proven ability to understand and to provide innovative solutions when working with varying partners and allies in a bipartisan non-profit organization. Demonstrated experience in leading organizational change and effectiveness. Experience leading and supporting initiatives to garner community input and to develop relationships driven by a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Proven ability to build high-trust relationships across internal and external organizational settings. Expertise in managing fund development and contractual originations with public and philanthropic partners. Experience in creating and implementing new strategies as well as evaluating existing plans and data to maximize the outcome of marketing, communications, and member engagement. Demonstrated experience in media related communications, public affairs, and stakeholder management. Marketing and visual communications design skills, including identifying current and emerging trends and technology. Expertise in written, verbal, editing, interpersonal, presentation, and brand management with a variety of print and online communications media. Demonstrated project management skills. Ability to lead and facilitate others to desired goals. Education: Bachelor s degree Public Policy, Human Services, or related field; an advanced degree is highly preferred.
