The incumbent will provide engineering and administration in support of a very large distributed clustered Splunk environment consisting of search heads, indexers, deployers, deployment servers, and heavy/universal forwarders. Familiarity with Splunk IT Service Intelligence and Splunk Enterprise Security is important, as both are utilized within the environment. The candidate should be a subject matter expert and be proficient with onboarding new data sources into Splunk, analyzing the data for anomalies and trends, and building dashboards to highlight key trends in the data. The Splunk Engineer should be proficient with Linux, editing and maintaining Splunk configuration files and apps.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Providing guidance, oversight, and operational support for all National Logging Service (Splunk) infrastructure with a focus on data quality and data governance. Working as a subject matter expert to provide technical advice and make recommendations to management and other technical specialists on critical data-related issues.
  • Serving as a liaison between business and functional areas and technology to ensure that data related business requirements for protecting sensitive data are clearly defined, communicated, and well understood and considered as part of operational prioritization and planning.
  • Overseeing data onboarding with a focus on industry best practices, ensuring data added to Splunk is associated with a valid business or security use case. Normalizing data to ensure Splunk Common Information Model (CIM) compliance.
  • Performing integration activities to configure, connect, and pull data with 3rd party software application programming interface (APIs).
  • Developing reports, alerts, and dashboards to operationalize data and to show value to key stakeholders.
  • Leading projects and/or development activities related to highly specialized areas of technology.
  • Conducting research in areas driven by customer use cases and architect solutions to support these requirements.
  • Assisting with the automation, deployment, integration, and testing of enterprise systems and services and creating and optimizing big data correlations as a Splunk search language expert.
  • Working closely with business stakeholders and IT Professionals to design solutions to monitor performance and compliance with Judiciary logging policy.
  • Performing as an engineering voice and mentor to help contractor staff recognize and onboard new data sources into Splunk, analyze the data for anomalies and trends, and building dashboards highlighting the key trends of the data.
  • Installing and upgrading all tiers of Splunk servers.
  • Developing and managing comprehensive documentation, artifacts, procedures, and processes for the optimal management of the Splunk infrastructure and Operations.
  • Overseeing the optimization, operation, and health of Splunk components and connections to data sources: cluster management of search head and index servers, query scheduling, performance tuning, applications, dashboards, saved searches, scheduled searches, alerts, etc.

    Applicants must have demonstrated experience as listed below. This requirement is according to the AO Classification, Compensation, and Recruitment Systems which include interpretive guidance and reference to the OPM Operating Manual for Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions.

    Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience, which is in or directly related to the line of work of this position. Specialized experience is demonstrated experience providing network engineering and system administration in support of a very large distributed clustered Splunk environment.
