Performs selected routine laboratory tests, and records and reports results. Sets up and maintains equipment; monitors quality control standards. Performs routine clerical and service duties as required. May support the laboratory with inventory/ordering, SAP transactions, and back-up to other tasks as assigned. Responsible for initiating or verifying that proper actions are taken to resolve problems; provides expertise in processing and workflow of assigned areas. Where assigned: Reviews lab requisitions and collects pertinent clinical and insurance information. May perform data entry, processing of specimens, both for in-house and referrals; billing functions, and all pre-analytic set ups. (Transfusion Medicine - CLS 1 may provide support for, tissue bank and other donor processing activities)Education: Work requires formal educational background in biology, chemistry, hematology, immunohematology and/or microbiology meeting regulatory requirements for testing; normally acquired through completion of a two year post-secondary school program in clinical laboratory technology or related four year degree (ie Biology, Chemistry). Associates degree as Clinical/Medical Laboratory Tech (MLT), preferred.Licensure/Certification: This role is intended for new MLT (Associates degree) graduates with less than 2 years of experience or for AA degree MLT's without certification. This role is also used for BS degree science based programs endorsed by the Department of Pathology. (Credits must meet the minimum science foundation for the MT program and are not eligible for advancement to CLS2 without obtaining further minimum qualifications for those jobs).Required Work Experience: Completed MLT clinical rotations or six months of MLT Internship or one-year Clinical Lab experience or course work specific to the discipline.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of various testing procedures, proper set up and maintenance of equipment, normal test values or results, and familiarity with quality control standards (and requisite skills to meet the quality and quantity standards of the position.)Ability to analyze and determine test results.Requisite skills to meet the quality and quantity standards of the position. Ability to demonstrate accuracy, thoroughness and orderliness in compliance with quality control standards. Maintain quality control standards and prioritize work time to handle STAT and routine specimens. Ability to distinguish between low and high priority activities. Requires basic interpersonal skills to maintain effective communication. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail under stressful circumstances.
