The IHS is an Equal Opportunity Employer.VideosHelpDutiesProvide Institutional Environmental Health (IEH) technical support: Evaluate proposed designs for compliance with safety, infection control, radiation protection and other IEH considerations and provide authoritative guidance and assistance on codes/ standards interpretation on IEH issues. Ensure Areas are abreast of new rules, regulations, and laws affecting safety management, industrial hygiene, radiation protection, infection control, environmental management systems, and other IEH topics and develop guidance documents (circulars, policies, guidelines), as needed. Develop budget justification documents and responses to congressional inquiries concerning IEH activities. Conduct assessments and makes recommendations to improve Area IEH programs, and work with both IHS and tribal leaders to develop effective and efficient IEH programs.Provide Agency-wide Program Support: Determine program goals and objectives for the national IHS institutional environmental health program and determine program emphasis areas; determine best solutions for resolving budget shortages and needs; and plan for long range staffing and contracting needs. Support agency-wide IEH educational and training needs, manage the IHS IEH Residency Program, and serve as the primary agency preceptor for students in the Residency Program.Direct and Coordinate the IHS Occupational Safety Program: Direct, coordinate, and monitor the IHS Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Program. Serve as the agency OSH technical advisor to the IHS Designated Agency Safety and Health Official. Advise the Director and the Chief Medical Officer on matters pertaining to worker and environment-related patient safety. Gather and analyze data from national injury databases and prepare recurring agency level OSH reports for submission. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Providing Institutional Environmental Health technical support to many levels of a complex agency; providing authoritative guidance and assistance on codes/standards interpretation on institutional environmental health issues; ensuring all levels of a complex Federal organization are abreast of new rules, regulations, and laws affecting safety management, industrial hygiene, radiation protection, infection control, and environmental management systems; preparing technical guidance documents, reports, position papers, and white papers to communicate critical institutional environmental health information; and determining program goals and objectives for a national IHS institutional environmental health program. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: In addition to the qualification requirements, to be rated basically qualified for the position, applicant must have a current unrestricted professional registration as an Environmental Health Specialist through the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) is a State, District of Columbia, Guam, or Territory of the United States. -Or Credentialing as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) through the Board for Global Environmental Health Services Credentialing (BGC). -Or Credentialing as a Safety Professional (CSP) through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level.
