Main Function: Under indirect supervision performs quality computed tomography procedures utilizing the concepts and principles of radiation protection/safety. Coordinates daily work schedule and activities of the CT section according to department need. Operates sophisticated CT imaging and computer equipment according to protocol and procedure. Prepares and administers oral and IV contrast media according to protocol. Duties and Responsibilities:1. Performs a variety of CT procedures to ensure the quality and continuity of patient care. Ensures completion of all work assignments prior to end of shift to assist with reduced length of stay initiatives. 2. Verifies patient identity and reviews each patient's requisition for consistency of examination ordered with clinical diagnosis and all demographic information. Records pertinent data on requisition at all times. 3. Assesses patient condition, ensures patient safety through proper radiation safety practices and proper positioning devices. Demonstrates ability to organize patient care and set priorities by providing critical care first and by implementing the physician's orders. 4. Prepares barium for oral, rectal or nasogastric administration according to department protocol and physician order. 5. Inserts, maintains, and discontinues Heparin lock or IV access devices as required by patient condition. Administers IV contrast media through said devices. Performs phlebotomy at time of procedure to reduce patient pain and inconvenience. 6. Participates in the Cat Scan Section On-Call schedule 7. Reviews each examination for technical accuracy and abnormal pathology. Presents completed examination to a radiologist via Teleradiology and communicates pertinent data to persons responsible for the care of the patient immediately following the procedure. 8. Processes all patients through the Meditech system before end of shift to ensure proper documentation and billing information. 9. Recommends, participates and assists in the implementation of expense control initiatives. 10. Takes an active role in the education of students. 11. Properly marks and identifies all CT scans. Transfers CT images from tape to disk laser printer. 12. Reports all safety hazards and/or CT equipment malfunctions that could harm patients, visitors or other hospital employees to appropriate supervisor immediately. 13. Maintains proper stocking and cleanliness of CT rooms. 14. Establishes and maintains a good rapport and working relationship with departmental staff, hospital staff, patients, families, physicians and hospital visitors. 15. As identified in the department/unit specific competency plan, demonstrates: a. The technical competence necessary to provide quality care to age specific population. b. The ability to assess the developmental needs of age specific population. c. The ability to use equipment in a safe and proper manner. 16. Other duties as assigned by appropriate supervisor/manager. 17. Demonstrates support and compliance with the Maryland General Hospital' mission, vision, values, philosophy, goals, objectives and policies. What You Need to Be Successful: Education and Experience1. Graduation from an AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology; registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists; licensed by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is required.2. CPR certification is required.
