The Health Department of Fairfax County is a progressive public health leader providing services that promote population health, protect public health and the environment, and ensure residents' access to health services and information. Developing a competent public health workforce is integral to the department's mission.

The Fairfax County Health Department seeks to recruit a health promotion coordinator to support the reduction of chronic diseases and health disparities through the implementation of a comprehensive health improvement program that will serve residents within its diverse community. In collaboration with staff and leadership across the Department the Health Promotion Coordinator will coordinate, support, and strengthen health improvement programs to effectively plan, implement, communicate, evaluate, and promote identified health improvement priorities. The successful candidate will contribute to maintaining awareness and aligning agency health improvement work with public health and community partners. The position will contribute towards subject-matter expertise on health education, population health, behavior change, health promotion practices and health communications for the Department and the Partnership for a Healthier Fairfax. This position provides technical assistance to agency staff and community coalitions to scope, research, plan, implement, address barriers, and evaluate health improvement programs. Other duties of the position include supporting data collection and evaluation of outcomes for health improvement programs across the Health Department and the public health community coalitions; maintaining content for the Live Healthy Fairfax Community Health Dashboard; and developing reports and presentations for Department staff and leadership, and external stakeholders as required.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in field related to the assigned functional area; Plus four years of professional work experience with in the functional area.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • AED-Required within 60 days
  • CPR -Required within 60 days

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services Registry check, a driving record check, and sanction screening to the satisfaction of the employer. A TB screening upon hire and annually thereafter. Requires a National Provider Identifier.

This position is emergency/essential services personnel. (Required to report for duty during inclement weather and/or other emergencies.)

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs may be subject to a weekly testing requirement. Vaccinated employees and employees with a medical or religious exemption will complete the attestation online on their first day of employment or shortly thereafter.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least 5 years' experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating broad scale health promotion or population health improvement initiatives. Demonstrated project management experience and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in public health, principles and practices of community engagement, and behavior change strategies.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Experience working independently, setting priorities, and multi-tasking.
  • Experience with and advanced skills using MS Office Word and Excel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Job is generally sedentary in nature, and requires walking, standing, sitting (for long periods of time), and kneeling, reaching, bending, climbing stairs; may be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs. occasionally. Uses hands to grasp, handle, or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor; ability to operate keyboard driven equipment and computer. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. Generally, works in an office environment yet may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office setting. Ability to drive a motor vehicle. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
