Job Announcement

Works as part of the Office to Prevent and End Homelessness (OPEH), a division of Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD.) Will be part of a team to ensure the county’s homeless shelters, group homes, and other supportive housing are maintained in a high standard. Conducts basic repairs and preventive maintenance in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and painting, as well as ensures the lawns are mowed and raked/free from debris regularly and driveways and sidewalks free of snow in the winter. Illustrative Duties

  • Assists in preparing vacant housing units for occupancy by performing maintenance and repair work using a variety of trades skills;
  • Informs supervisor of major maintenance issues;
  • Performs plumbing repairs and replaces fixtures when necessary;
  • Performs electrical repairs including replacement of plugs, outlets, switches, bulbs and light fixtures;
  • Performs carpentry, drywall and plaster repairs;
  • Makes repairs and installs window treatments such as screens, blinds and shades;
  • Performs minor appliance repairs, replacing motors, switches, gaskets and burners to insure safe, efficient appliance operations;
  • Performs preventative maintenance in vacant units, e.g., caulking areas subject to water damage, adjusting doors, drawers and windows;
  • Assists other repair workers to prepare vacant units for occupancy;
  • Operates and performs routine maintenance on a County vehicle;
  • Performs cleaning and custodial work to complete the preparation work in vacant housing units.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • General knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices and tools used in the building maintenance and construction trades;
  • Knowledge of the common hazards and necessary safety precautions;
  • Skill in the use of tools, equipment, materials pertinent to the trades;
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions, diagrams and manufacturers manuals;
  • Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships;
  • Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on a County motor vehicle.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; plus, completion of an acceptable apprentice-level training program in a specific trade with one year of experience performing building maintenance, repair, and/or construction work independently, or two years of varied and responsible full performance-level experience in building maintenance, repair or construction trades.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working on a maintenance crew a plus.
  • Experience in the repair and installation of residential plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Experience using construction tools and equipment, as well as general carpentry, drywall installation and painting.
  • Experience working in occupied residential properties and interacting directly with clients.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Driver's License (Required)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date . PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
To perform the essential functions incumbent must have the ability to frequently stand; walk; use hands to grasp, handle, or feel; reach, climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; bend; or crawl and occasionally sit. Use varied hand and power tools; lift or move materials and/or equipment exceeding 50 lbs. with assistance of other staff or equipment. Ability to communicate with others verbally and in writing. Vision is required to read printed materials, computer screen and distinguish between colors; operate keyboard driven equipment and computer. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
