An Overview
A Heavy Equipment Operator operates one or more types of automotive equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with such operations. Employees in this class are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of several types of automotive equipment. Incumbents may service and make minor mechanical repairs. Assignments are outlined in detail by a supervisor, standard procedures are followed, and work is inspected periodically for safety and economy of operation.

The Opportunity

  • Primary function is to operate a Vacuum Truck and Sewer Jetter Truck
  • Operates vehicles and equipment in support of Federal MS4 stormwater and sanitary sewer permit activities.
  • Operates and assists in the loading and unloading, of CDL and non-CDL truck(s) in connection with transportation of sand, stone, asphalt, gravel, equipment, and other supplies (tools, supplies, etc.).
  • Keeps equipment clean, makes minor repairs, and reports any malfunctions of equipment to fleet management shop and or Supervisor.
  • Utilize computer software (Cityworks) to track work efforts.
  • Responds to citizens inquiries regarding Public Works Services.
  • Responds to emergency or special events activity as needed.
  • Leads a small crew under direct supervision from a Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.
  • Operates a snowplow with a salt spreader, salting/sanding icy streets and also shovels snow when not operating heavy trucks.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • One should possess the ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of weather.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess a High School Diploma or GED; three years experience in the operation of heavy equipment; one year of supervisory experience; thorough knowledge of the proper methods of transporting heavy loads and load limits, traffic safety rules and accident prevention practices; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Skills in the operation of heavy multi-purpose motor equipment under all types of weather conditions.

Additional Requirements: Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the proper endorsements in the state of residency.
