The Physician Supervisor should be Board Certified/Board Eligible in Neurology with special interest in Sleep disorders and clinical neurophysiology. The ideal candidate will have Board Certification in Neurology with subspecialty experience and board certification in Sleep Medicine.

The Physician Supervisor will provide care to the veteran patients in the Neurology Department at the Washington VA Medical Center with particular emphasis on sleep Medicine and clinical neurophysiology.

Scope of Position:

  • Diagnosing, treating and managing veteran patients with Sleep Disorders according to standard, usual and acceptable or customary methods and techniques.
  • Work with physician and technologists in the sleep program within the Department of Neurology.
  • Responsibilities will include sleep clinic, reading sleep studies and teaching sleep fellows.
  • Will participate in reading EEGs(routine and long term and other neurophysiologic studies).
  • Report to the Chief of Neurology related to clinical and departmental responsibilities.
  • Work independently, caring for outpatients in an established sleep specialty clinic.
  • Shall be expected to cooperate with and participate in medical duties or functions related to quality of care review and improvement.
  • May have additional duties as collaborative support technicians and sleep fellows and physician assistants.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with all members of the Sleep Clinic team, and the Neurology department clinical and administrative staff.
  • Will participate in the general Neurology clinic and the inpatient Neurologist service, including ward service duties as Attending physician, and on the inpatient consultation team.
  • Will participate in teaching and supervision of Neurology residents and medical students and other trainees rotating through Neurology service, and outside of the Neurology department within the VA Medical Center Washington DC.
  • Will participate in on-call duties for the Department of Neurology including weekend and evening/night-time hours as needed to fulfill his/her obligations in the clinical care of the patients.
  • Will participate in Sleep telehealth aspects including sleep telehealth visits.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday;8:00 am to 4:30 pm-Due to nature of the work, may occasionally be required to stay later than 4:30 pm., as required. As part of the Neurology service, the physician will participate in on-call duties that will require work on weekends and evenings/nights, outside of hours of regular tour of duty.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Licensure and Registration. Physicians must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the state of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure..
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
    [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
    (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
    Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Additional Preferred Requirement: The physician should be Board Certified/Board Eligible in Neurology with special interest in Sleep disorders and clinical neurophysiology

Preferred Experience:
The ideal candidate will have Board Certification in Neurology with subspecialty experience and board certification in Sleep Medicine.

Leadership/Manager Positions. Physician leadership and manager positions may be facility chiefs of staff, directors (i.e., medical center and Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN)); selected positions in VHA Central Office; and service chiefs or service line managers. Positions are approved for these levels based on the scope and complexity of the assignment and the level of responsibility

Service Chief or Line Manager. A service chief or line manager physician must demonstrate the following:
(a) Outstanding professional ability in the practice of medicine or a medical specialty; and
b) Ability to guide the development and implementation of programs within their respective domain. These programs would include, but are not limited to medical practice, professional standards, personnel issues, and quality and performance improvement.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Required to be able to examine patients, perform procedures on patients, converse with patients chart in medical record. May have to carry light equipment and traverse hallways and come back and forth to work place. (See VA Directive and Handbook 5019).

Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
  • Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
  • Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
  • For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]

  • NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
