Description Are you passionate about quality manufacturing? Are you driven to explore and implement new technology? Do you enjoy tackling complex fabrication tasks that require multiple processes? Do you relish working on impactful projects that advance the state of the art in science and technology and make critical contributions to our Nation's security? If so, we 're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL. We are hiring for a Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) Technician and seeking a person with experience in CNC machining to support fabrication of spaceflight hardware, other fielded hardware, prototype components for testing, and test specimens for research and development projects. You will be a vital member of ditive APL 's Ad Manufacturing Center (AMC), within the Research and Exploratory Development Department. The AMC leads the implementation of innovative AM related technologies to meet the future needs of APL staff and our Government sponsors. The AMC also supports APL with specialized prototyping and low volume production services. Metal Additive Manufacturing enables tremendous design freedom to elevate system performance in a wide variety of ways, however, metal AM parts need post machining to achieve the level of precision and surface quality often required in advanced applications. With an understanding of the capabilities and limitations of additive manufacturing and precision machining, you will influence design for additive and machining, and support fabrication planning for successful outcomes. As a member of our team, you 'll build hardware that explores other planets and interstellar space through various NASA missions as well as building critical prototype hardware for our nation 's national security and national health interests. As an Additive Manufacturing Machinist Your primary responsibility will be producing metal components using metal addtivie manufacturing machines. You will learn the capabilities and limitations of the additive manufacturing machines and apply that knowledge with your knowledge of CNC machining to modify part designs for printing and machining. You will develop CAD skills to make design modifications for manufacturability. You will become adept at using build setup software to orient, position, design support structures, and assign lasing parameters for each part on the build plate. You will be trained on safe operation and maintenance of metal additive manufacturing machines. You will lead the setup of the machines. Typical tasks will include: 1) import .stl (or similar) files into build preparation software and complete layout, support generation and build parameter setup for the job 2) load new material (eg, powder) and build platform, and 3) run calibration builds, machine diagnostics, and pre-build routines to prepare the machine for printing, 4) monitor jobs for defects and take corrective actions as necessary 5) ensure process documentation is up to date and accurate 6) communicate build status to customers and 7) clean build chambers of residual material, sieve powder, and prepare the machines for subsequent jobs. You will facilitate post-process steps, including inspection of parts for defects and dimensio nal accuracy, part removal from build plate, support removal, and finish machining. You will track consummable resources and ensure sufficient supply is on hand to avoid delays. Qualifications You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you Have a High School Diploma or equivalent. You 'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you Have a Bachelor's degree or higher in a related engineering or science field. 2+ years experience operating metal additive manufacturing machines (selective laser melting or directed energy deposition) in a research or industrial setting. Experience with computer aided design software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CREO, or similar. Experience using MasterCAM or similar CAM software. Have experience with health and safety practices in an industrial laboratory environment with chemical, mechanical, and laser hazards. Have an aptitude for working on computer controlled equipment.
