This entry level engineer job will work with experienced team members to perform preliminary design analysis, format drawings, and assist with complex design assignments. The ideal candidate is eager to learn, work with a team, take initiative, and execute challenging assignments.

The Office of Capital Program Delivery is seeking Junior Engineers for multiple current and future vacancies across a variety of departments, projects, and discipline areas.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering Discipline

  • No prior experience required

  • Roadway Worker Protection (RWP)

  • Successful completion of an engineering related or Metro sponsored college internship or employment program
  • Driver's License from jurisdiction of residence

Job Summary

The Production Supervisor, Replication and Digitizing Services is accountable for both technical knowledge and management skills. This position provides the daily supervision of Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)'s Print Shop, including facilities and personnel. The incumbent processes incoming jobs, keeps detailed records of the work, assigns and prioritizes work, schedules staff, maintains supply inventory and establishes quality standards.

The Junior Engineer works under the direct supervision and support of one or more professional engineers (PE's) or engineering managers. The incumbent performs preliminary design analysis and formatting of drawings and assists engineers in carrying out complex design assignments. Under direct supervision and direction, the incumbent may incorporate engineering requirements in memos and letters, respond to requests for information, route submittals, review change orders and contractor proposals, and draft project control documents for others to approve and finalize.

This is an entry level professional position requiring some knowledge and the ability to quickly learn how to perform drafting work using CAD software, perform basic engineering design work to include linework, calculations, and specifications, and review engineering designs to include the review and evaluate calculations, drawings and specifications...

  • Under supervision of Licensed Professional Engineer (PE), drafts designs and drawings using AutoCAD and other engineering computer programs. Learns to apply engineering practices and principles to ensure adequacy of designs and adherence to WMATA standards. Assist engineers by executing basic work of increasing complexity.
  • Under direction from supervisor, learns how to coordinate with other disciplines and other offices to ensure design requirements are met.
  • Under close direction and supervision of a licensed PE, coordinates and reviews contractor submitted shop drawings, catalog cuts, samples, specifications, and requests for information. Collects technical questions from project staff and field personnel and escalates to more senior engineering staff for resolution.
  • Investigates issues and develops reports to collect and describe findings when reviewing feasibility studies, special reports and other documents, as assigned.
  • Conducts site inspections and field visits when reviewing drawings and specifications to verify accuracy and ensure that deviations are brought to attention of supervisor and field managers. Makes preliminary recommendations as knowledge is gained for resolution of variance and conflicts. Reads drawings and takes photographs as required. Maintains RWP certification at appropriate level, utilize required PPE and complies with rules and procedures that apply to personnel on site and field visits per WMATA RWP handbook and other safety related procedures .
  • As directed and under supervision, prepares draft documentation and preliminary designs to support resolution of issues that arise due to changes in or actual site conditions.
  • Participate in substantial completion inspections and develops documentation to support findings.
  • Reviews WMATA standard and directive drawings and makes preliminary recommendations for needed updates to support current configurations and or prevailing standards.
  • Perform estimating, scheduling, project planning and field coordination tasks under direction and supervision of project or engineering managers.
