Nutrition and Food Studies Term Instructional FacultyGeorge Mason University's Department of Nutrition and Food Studies (NFS), invites applications for a full-time term instructional assistant/associate/full professor (9-month, non-tenure track, state-funded) with a start date of August 2023.George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.About the Department:The Department of Nutrition and Food Studies is one of six academic units within the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) which comprises the departments of Social Work, Global and Community Health, Health Administration and Policy, Rehabilitation Science and the School of Nursing. The College is currently transitioning to become a College of Public Health. George Mason University is an R1-ranked research university and among the most diverse in the US.The Department of Nutrition and Food Studies was founded in 2011 and there are currently seven full-time faculty members, with backgrounds ranging from food science, global nutrition, obesity, performance nutrition, public health nutrition, maternal and child health, to food systems. The Department offers an MS in Nutrition and both undergraduate minors and graduate certifications in Food Security and Nutrition. A dietetics concentration within the MS degree recently became accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), which enables credentialing of Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN). The first dietetics class matriculated in the Fall of 2022. The Department is housed in the Peterson Family Health Sciences Hall and includes faculty and staff offices, a state-of-the-art Nutrition Teaching Kitchen and a Human Nutrition Assessment Lab. In addition, Peterson Hall includes the College's Population Health Center, offering clinical and research space for faculty and experiential learning opportunities for students. More information about the Department is available at https://nutrition.gmu.edu/.Responsibilities:Responsibilities include teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level, participating in Department, College and University governance, professional and public service, and performing assignments such as supervising Master student internships/theses and student advising. Annual appointment will depend on performance and budget.The selected candidate will be expected to teach up to four courses per semester depending on administrative activities related to the dietetics program. Courses will be in a variety of nutrition areas including introductory nutrition, Pre-Dietetics, courses in the MS program, as well as in the MS/RDN program. Responsibilities for the MS/RDN program may include assisting with planning, coordinating, facilitating, administering, and monitoring activities on behalf of the program. These activities ensure the quality of the student learning experience during their experiential learning. In addition, the candidate would work closely with the Program Director to develop and assess the experiential learning component of the program, including conducting student site visits and ensuring ACEND competencies are met. CHHS faculty can buy out course load through external grant support and administrative duties.Required Qualifications:Successful candidates will have a doctoral degree in nutrition or closely-related field at time of employment. A RDN credential is required. In addition, experience with successful methods of teaching and learning, developing academic programs and curriculum, online curriculum development, fostering research opportunities and a record of scholarship and teaching in higher education is valued.
