An Overview

The Therapist Supervisor, Comprehensive Recovery Team Supervisor is responsible for providing clinical and administrative supervision to therapists/clinical recovery coaches providing targeted case management in the comprehensive recovery team. The Therapist Supervisor provides individual and group supervision and reviews documentation for Department and regulatory body standards. This position provides 30 hours supervisory/administrative activities and 10 hours direct clinical care. Tasks are performed in accordance with established policies and procedures under the supervision of the Comprehensive Recovery Team Leader .

The ideal candidate should have knowledge of current behavioral health evidence based practices; skill and ability in implementing evidenced based practices in a behavioral health setting; knowledge of the psychological and physiological aspects of mental illness and substance misuse, knowledge of the effects of licit and illicit drugs; knowledge of mental illnesses and treatment methods and practices used in psychiatric disorders; and the ability to effectively manage others.

The Opportunity
  • Provides clinical and administrative supervision to therapists/clinical recovery coaches including ongoing review of clinical activity and documentation thereof to assure conformance with treatment and record keeping standards.
  • Conducts quality improvement activities, including record review, individual and group supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Assists staff in using the electronic health record and assures that records are up to date and in conformance with CARF and Department standards.
  • Assures that cases are promptly assigned for therapeutic case management services.
  • Prepares staff performance evaluations in timely manner and consults supervisor well in advance of due date.
  • Carries a case load of consumers and provides treatment services, including assessments, crisis intervention, individual and group therapy, care coordination, discharge planning, and case management.
  • Attends all relevant team meetings.
  • Identifies team and clients served unmet needs and collaborates with supervisor and others in considering implementation of change/improvements.
  • Assists in the hiring and training of new staff.
  • Maintains compliance with all Department training requirements.
  • Performs other related work as assigned.

About the Department

The Center for Adult Services (CAS) provides programs and services in Aging; Adult Protective Services; Clinical & Emergency Services; and Community & Residential Support Services for seniors and for persons with mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance use disorders. CAS provides compassionate and effective person-centered services based on best practices. Our teams support self-determination, safety and recovery for Alexandria residents affected by abuse, neglect, mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance abuse disorders.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Master's degree in Human Services; At least two years post-graduate work experience in providing direct clinical services to clients having psychiatric and/or substance abuse disorders; At least two years post-master's experience providing diagnostic evaluations, assessments, and crisis intervention. Licensed in Virginia as an LCSW, LPC, LSATP, or Clinical Psychologist OR is license eligible (has completed all required education and supervision as required by applicable board) as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner (LSATP), or Clinical Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia at the time of appointment; if license eligible, the employee must obtain Virginia license at the first available opportunity, but no later than one year after appointment. Good driving record/background check; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

One year of supervisory experience; At least two years of behavioral health case management experience; At least two years providing services to adults with serious mental illness and co-occurring disorders in a community behavioral health center or similar setting; Currently licensed in VA as an LCSW, LPC, LSATP or Clinical Psychologist. Ability to work flexible schedule including some evening or weekend hours, if needed.


This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment background checks including but not limited to: FBI/Federal Records Check; VA State Child Abuse/Neglect Registry; Medicare/Medicaid Fraud Database; education/certifications; and driver’s license.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, some evenings and weekends occasionally required based on client need.
