Job Summary

Aptive is seeking a Senior System Engineer with demonstrated experience with designing, building and deploying networks. In this position the selected candidate will provide services for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Office of Information & Technology (OIT), Infrastructure Operations (IO), VA Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) Integrated Project Team (IPT). IPT is responsible for developing the master transition plan for all required activities related to its execution. Infrastructure Operations has a requirement to migrate hardware, operating systems, applications, and other elements of its IT infrastructure from Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) to IPv6.

In this role, you will design, configure, deploy, and maintain IPv6 connectivity at both the Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) levels, ensuring end-to-end IPv6 connectivity is successful between endpoints located throughout the VA enterprise. This shall include automated network configuration and inventory management IPv6 to minimize the risk of human error during testing and transition.

Primary Responsibilities

Implement end-to-end IPv6 connectivity for endpoints, network equipment, applications, and services hosted within the on-premises VA enterprise network and VA Enterprise Cloud (VAEC). Deploy IPv6 technology across VA on-premises core infrastructure, network operations, support desks, and security systems, as well as VA Enterprise Cloud (VAEC) where applicable.
  • Monitors network performance, ensures capacity planning is performed, and is proactive in accessing and making recommendations for improvement.
  • Plans, installs, configures, administers, and troubleshoots the network systems for LAN and WAN environments.
  • Participates in troubleshooting
  • Able to convey technical information in a manner suitable to the audience
  • Assist in planning IP utilization and networks, DHCP, DNS, redundancy, failover, and high availability
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve network, application and performance issues
  • Train and teach others and document architecture, designs and changes

Minimum Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience
  • Bachelor's degre
  • Solid understanding of Networking technologies
  • Experience with wireless and ethernet network troubleshooting
  • Programming or scripting using a common language such as Python, Puppet, Ansibile, TeraForm, and Powershell
  • Patience and ability to work in a change management model with a great attention to detail and best practices
  • Ability to work well in a dynamic, high-pressure, team-oriented environment
  • Manage network switch configuration, upgrade using common CLI commands
  • Understanding of layer 2 connectivity and concepts such as port configuration, VLANs, Trunking/LAG, and MAC addresses
  • Router configuration and basic routing concepts including subnets and subnet masks, next hop, routing tables and troubleshooting connectivity between subnets)
  • Wireless troubleshooting for coverage/performance issues using tools to assess signal strength, interference and client specific problems
  • Basic firewall policy construction using source/destination addresses and ports and troubleshooting issues related to firewall policies
  • DNS configuration for basic records such as TXT, A, CNAME, PTR. Ability to use tools like "nslookup" and "host" to troubleshoot missing or incorrect information
  • DHCP configuration for subnets/address pools or reserved/fixed IP information
  • Client VPN concepts and troubleshooting connectivity issues
  • Familiarity with Network monitoring tools and concepts for monitoring performance, generating reports or alerts
  • Packet capturing using tools like Wireshark
  • Experience with leading small to midsize projects required
  • Managing and prioritizing assigned tickets using a trouble ticketing system
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize activities
  • Excellent customer service skills; tact and sensitivity in dealing with customers
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate well with those of all technical levels, including end users

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a government clearance
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
