The Portfolio Manager supports the innovation process by monitoring and tracking progress of innovation initiatives and partnering with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate the work process. Collaborates with management to identify opportunities to streamline innovation operation processes and develops new procedures that support the business unit/department.


  • Leads an engagement and acts as primary point-of-contact for startups, leveraging human-centered design processes to assist them with addressing challenges and capitalizing on opportunities to scale and sustainably grow their companies.
  • Develops engagement goals and tactics, in collaboration with startups, which emphasize measurable outcomes and actionable results, as well as creating strategic deliverables (e.g. discussion guides, go-to-market strategies, etc.), and supporting startups in executing the tactics as appropriate.
  • Designs tests and surveys to gather rapid insights. Plans and executes facilitation of in-depth interviews, focus groups, and user testing. Collaborates with key stakeholders across the organization (e.g. Recruiting Center of Excellence, Office of Volunteer Engagement, etc.) to identify and use the appropriate tools and resources to perform market and product research.
  • Provides business strategy guidance, expertise, and leadership startups for the organization's Enterprise Innovation team around how they deliver value-driven and measurable outcomes.
  • Researches external studies, market reports, customer feedback, competitor trends, etc., in support of strategic ideas.


  • 5+ years of marketing experience,management/operations experience, and/or experience working with startups.
  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree.
  • Strong understanding of the startup ecosystem.
  • Must possess a high level of mastery of project leadership, partner management, coordination, idea evaluation and experiment design.
  • Moderate level of fluency in product design, prototyping and marketing required.
  • Demonstrated thought leadership in the practice and application of innovation and agile learning methodologies.
  • Proven track record of managing long term projects from beginning to end, collaborating with external companies/vendors with shared goals.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • In-office/open office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
