Duties

This position is located within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), VA Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center (HVAMC). This position is aligned with the Geriatrics and Extended Care Services.

Major duties include, but not limited to:
  • Performs and records history and physical examinations and records date from clinic visits. Enters progress notes in CPRS and completes required encounters in a timely manner as per hospital policy.
  • Orders diagnostic tests, medications, laboratory tests and consultations as is medically relevant for the patient. Interprets and applies findings to make a medical diagnosis and proper disposition of patient.
  • Determines medical assessment and develops treatment plans according to accepted medical standards.
  • Exhibits leadership in initiating changes in patient care programs based on current concepts, and findings from research, studies and best practices.
  • Prescribed medications including controlled substances according to approved formulary and in accordance with Federal and State Law and VHA Regulations.
  • Processes View alerts and all other patient notifications in a timely manner and addresses abnormal alert values per hospital policy. Do not allow view alerts and other notifications to exceed accumulation of more than 100.
  • Educates patients concerning medical conditions and recommended treatment. Specific topics include health behaviors, medical reconciliation, need for alcohol and smoking cessation, immunization recommendations, health screening tests and other preventative measures.
  • Performs approved procedures when indicated and approved by scope of practice.
  • Performs duties necessary to maintain the life of patients in their care. The procedures include resuscitative measures such as Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support.
  • Provide care in a non-traditional health care setting, such as telehealth, secure messaging, e-consults, and deployable employable emergency medical personnel system or other austere environments.
  • Carry out health promotion, disease prevention and patient education activities as required to support the DTC and HCI.
  • Emergency Preparedness to include duties that may arise from because of national health disaster.
  • Serves on medical center committees as assigned
  • Works in collaboration with supervisory physician and Chief, Geriatrics, and Extended Care.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Physician Assistant Basic Requirements
  • Master's degree in any discipline or a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant ~AND~
  • Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) ~AND~
  • Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing, frequent bending, stooping, walking, reaching and repetitive motion. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The work environment requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a potentially noisy environment to include outdoor duties. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.
