Job Description
The Washington Post is looking for a dynamic multiplatform editor with strong news judgment, a flair for headline writing and a command of language and style. Our desk handles copy across all platforms in a rapidly evolving newsroom, so a desire to learn and an ability to master new skills are essential.
The ideal candidate will have experience with the traditional copy-editing duties of upholding quality and standards as well as optimizing journalism for digital distribution, including knowledge of SEO, recirculation, tagging and linking. An understanding of social media and print is a plus. We want a collaborative and proactive multiplatform editor who is excited to foster compelling storytelling across platforms.
This editor must be a critical thinker who is comfortable juggling many tasks and switching gears with ease. This person also must be able to prioritize tasks in real time; work quickly without sacrificing quality; and communicate collegially and effectively across a large, fast-paced newsroom. Strong headline- and caption-writing skills - and understanding the tone and approach required among discrete platforms - are vital in this role.
This position requires night and weekend work. Candidates should have at least two years of editing experience at a mid-to-large-market news organization or a digital outlet with a commitment to strong journalism. A copy-editing test will be required.
This position is based in our Washington newsroom.
Interested candidates should upload a résumé, cover letter and three to five examples of work (as PDFs) to our jobs portal. Work samples can include headlines, stories with editing marks or edited stories with explanations of what changed. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 09/08/2022 will be prioritized. The cover letter should be addressed to Multiplatform Editing Chief Courtney Rukan and Deputy Multiplatform Editing Chiefs Brian Cleveland and Nora Simon.
The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.
