Subscriptions Engineering is a fast-paced, high growth environment that respects its engineers and customers. We are looking for a self-driven engineer with a conscientious mentality and a commitment to innovate with high quality work. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with colleagues from all parts of the company - Marketing, Legal, Advertising, Analytics and the Newsroom.

Motivation
  • You are energized by learning new technologies and platforms.
  • You are driven to protect our readers' data and assure private and safe experiences.
  • You seek out opportunities to understand and become capable of explaining complex data systems.
  • You are intrigued by the idea of helping to form the next generation of privacy technology both at The Post and on the open web.
  • You are driven to solve the toughest problems and love to collaborate to figure out solutions
  • You have an aptitude for and enjoy simplifying and communicating technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • You have a passion for writing flexible and reusable code.
  • You are driven to make your code efficient and fast.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement solutions to ensure privacy and compliance policies are correctly implemented across cross-team initiatives. The implementations should advance compliance with legal forms of data use as well as support business use of data.
  • Work to align advanced technologies and Privacy by Design principles from first stages of development and ensure that the data use meets established regulatory compliance needs.
  • Collaborate with data product development teams creating new uses of data that employ privacy features.
  • Program software enhancements for new data streams with a goal of mitigating privacy vulnerabilities and preventing potential future privacy risks.
  • Write high-quality code with best practices and design patterns in mind and engage in code review/quality assurance.
  • Develop tools and extendable code others can use to preserve and improve privacy protections.
  • Document current practices around user data at the Post along with new more private solutions.
  • Participate in discussions internal and external about future web privacy standards and determine how to apply them at The Washington Post.

Qualifications

It's okay to not meet 100% of these requirements! We're primarily looking for people who meet some of these requirements and are motivated to learn new technologies and expand their skill set.
  • Experience with client-side scripting and JavaScript frameworks such as React and Angular.
