The Washington Post is seeking a dynamic and self-motivated Senior Tax Associate interested in collaborating with the Tax Manager and Global Head of Tax in building a modern and forward-looking Tax Department.

The purchase of The Washington Post by Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, has propelled the company into the elite set of US digital publishers. This is a great opportunity to expand your knowledge to different areas of domestic and international tax. You will be collaborating with the Tax Manager and Global Head of Tax on building and managing effective domestic and international tax compliance processes.

A successful candidate is an experienced tax professional with domestic and/or international income tax compliance expertise who is also interested in learning about indirect tax types that a business is responsible for (sales tax, use tax, property tax, VAT, GST, and other miscellaneous tax types). You are comfortable with frequently changing priorities and prioritizing competing deadlines. You are skilled at identifying potential tax issues and developing a resolution plan with minimum supervision. You are known for your ability to be well organized when facing multiple priorities under a tight deadline. You have proven ability in recommending and guiding the implementation of new and/or improved compliance processes, as well as developing recommendations and advising internal clients on specific tax inquiries. You collaborate and build effective working relationships with Tax team members and other teams within the organization.

Responsibilities:

Domestic & International Tax Compliance:
  • Maintain timely compliance of all domestic and international tax related filings by collaborating with other tax team members and third-party providers to timely prepare and file Federal, state, and foreign income tax returns (including managing third-party providers for transfer pricing reporting), Federal excise tax returns, property tax returns, local business license tax returns, state, foreign registration filings, preparing reports and calculations for sales/excise/occupation tax/VAT/GST compliance.
  • Collaborate with third-party consultants on compliance and research related items by providing necessary reports, reconciling filings to the GL and third-party reports, auditing filings, answering questions, and carrying-out tasks necessary to ensure proper record keeping and compliance.
  • Timely identify new filing obligations in the US and internationally by monitoring tax news that impact the Company's operations its direct and indirect tax nexus.
  • Ensure that tax liabilities are timely remitted by calculating quarterly estimated payments and nonresident withholding requirements.
  • Review and validate tax depreciation calculations by running fixed asset software (BNA) reports and completing book and tax reconciliations.
  • Meet tax statutory deadlines by maintaining the domestic and international tax calendar.
  • Support foreign employees with their tax compliance questions by collaborating with the Tax Manager to manage the internal tax protection program including liaising with third-party providers and other business units, monthly audits of the tax protection employee list and GL code, and timely responding to employee queries,
  • Support the Tax Manager and Global Head of Tax with foreign Permanent Establishment analysis and applicable registrations by completing relevant research and working with third-party providers to understand potential tax obligations and risks.
  • Support the Company's month close process by preparing and reviewing monthly and quarterly tax accruals and budget.

Ad Hoc Tasks:
  • Address queries and requests from internal business units by actively monitoring a shared team mailbox.
  • Support special purpose projects and new initiatives by partnering with the Tax Manager and collaborating with other internal departments.
  • Timely respond to notices and inquiries from tax authorities by working with other tax team members or third-party consultants.
  • Support summer and winter interns by providing guidance and task specific trainings.


Automation:
  • Improve manual processes by leveraging automation tools such as UI Path Studio X.
  • Increase efficiency and speed by actively searching for ways to automate existing processes and workbooks.


Motivation:
  • You are a tax professional with 3+ years of Federal and state income tax compliance background (partnership preferred but not required) looking to expand your tax knowledge to other domestic and international taxes applicable to a multinational business (sales and use tax, property taxes, VAT/GST, and other applicable taxes).
  • You are exceptionally organized and thorough, yet capable of moving quickly, managing several projects at the same time and meeting deadlines. You have no problem with changing priorities. As the business is changing, new tax research and compliance needs arise and require timely input from the Tax Department.
  • You have a proven track record of contributing on simultaneous projects.
  • You actively look for ways to reengineer your day-to-day processes to increase speed, efficiency, and effectiveness.
  • You are proficient in Excel and look for opportunities to automate manual processes.
  • You are obsessed with quality, self-review, and excellent customer service.
  • You are comfortable with asking questions and capable of having productive conversations across the organization.
  • You take ownership of your projects.
  • You are comfortable working and supporting a remote team.
  • (Preferred but not required) - You have experience with international tax matters.


Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of relevant tax compliance experience.
  • Bachelor's in Accounting (Master's in Tax preferred) from an accredited college/university.
  • Advanced Excel skills (ability to work with large data sets, manage monthly and quarterly VAT reconciliations and other calculation schedules, automate, and simplify processes via advanced Excel capabilities, etc.)
  • Knowledge of OneSource or GoSystem tax compliance software.
  • Natural curiosity to learn.
  • Demonstrated behaviors in problem-solving.
  • Strong bias for process improvement
