Job Description

The Washington Post is hiring a Principal Software Engineer to work on its ad rendering and monetization platform team. We work with the product, business intelligence and advertising teams to develop innovative software that maximizes revenue through our digital advertising business, which helps fund the best journalism in the world.

It's an exciting time to join the team, as we are redeveloping our ad rendering and header bidding strategy and exploring new approaches to digital advertising that will have a positive impact on the wider publishing community. You will play a critical role in our mission to redefine the strategic implementation of our advertising technology in a rapidly evolving marketplace. You will have an immediate impact on the washingtonpost.com website, which represents an important revenue stream for the company. This position reports to the Manager, Software Development on the Commercial Engineering team.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the redevelopment and ongoing evolution of The Washington Post's digital ad rendering and header bidding technologies
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams within The Post to identify dependencies, anticipate blockers and build collaborative working relationships to push projects through to completion
  • Leverage your experience with ad technologies to generate new product ideas and develop new revenue-generating products
  • Actively participate in the open source header bidding community to translate The Post's solutions to a broader audience
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest trends in digital advertising, including the use of first- and third-party cookies, identity solutions and evolving targeting approaches to help inform the product roadmap
  • Drive complex technical projects forward, going from requirements gathering to design, planning, implementation, testing, release, support, and monitoring.
  • Work closely with the product team and business stakeholders to communicate project progress and deliver results
  • Assist in establishing standards. Guide and mentor others. Perform code reviews.


Qualifications
  • 7+ years working in software engineering
  • 2+ years working in the digital advertising space
  • Deep understanding of digital advertising technology platforms, including Google Ad Manager and Prebid
  • Expertise with Javascript and front end frameworks like React
  • Experience managing engineers and successfully mentoring peers
  • Experience leading the implementation of technical projects
  • Experience with the AWS product suite, such as EC2, ECS, S3 and lambda
  • Proficiency with one or more server-side programming languages, such as Python or Node.js
  • Familiarity with performance tools like React hooks, lighthouse, Node, NextJS, unit and integration testing, Jest, Enzyme, Cypress
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Benefits may vary based on the job, full-time or part-time schedule, location, and collectively bargained status.

The Washington Post includes salary ranges for certain positions to comply with local pay transparency laws. The salary range for this position is:
$130,100.00 - $216,900.00

The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
