Job Announcement

Reports to Area 4 Maintenance Office (10401 Burke Lake Rd, Fairfax Station, VA) on a daily basis, then is detailed to necessary parks. Participates in a variety of unskilled tasks associated with mowing and grounds/park maintenance. Duties will include completing maintenance and repairs to park facilities, playground equipment, picnic areas, walkways, fencing, signs, and other amenities; the removal of trash, debris, and leaves; seeding; placement of sod; snow removal and making other minor repairs to turf surfaces. Uses various hand tools and gas-powered equipment and should possess the ability to inspect and operate a truck and trailer, hauling equipment and materials. Informs the supervisor of conditions requiring special attention. Ability to work overtime when necessary and during emergency weather events will be necessary Appointee will be required to work during emergency situations as this position is designated as emergency service personnel. In addition, occasional overtime may be required.

  • Collects and/or disposes of refuse, yard debris, recyclables, and other solid waste materials;
  • Clears sidewalks of ice and snow;
  • Mixes and pours concrete for foundations or other construction repair work;
  • Operates various types of trucks (e.g., dump truck, loader, flusher) for transporting equipment, tools, or crews to job sites;
  • Cleans facilities, to include removing trash and litter;
  • Loads and unloads trucks;
  • Maintains and repairs grounds and turf (i.e., reconditioning, vegetation control, and repairs);
  • Performs various landscaping tasks, to include propagating beds, edging, mulching, and planting;
  • Performs minor building and/or equipment repair and/or maintenance;
  • Operates tractors and mowers, chain saws, or cutoff saws;
  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;
  • Reports unsafe working conditions;
  • Complies with safety competencies.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of construction and maintenance of asphalt and concrete;
  • Working knowledge of small equipment to include weed eater, push mower, power tamper, chain saw, concrete saw and gas generator;
  • Basic knowledge of air compressors and pneumatic tools;
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use and perform basic scheduled maintenance on various types of hand tools, machinery, etc.;
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices;
    Ability to perform duties requiring manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude;
  • Ability to operate various types of motor vehicles;
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions;
  • Ability to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather, noxious fumes, high levels of dust, etc.;
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor;
  • Ability to comprehend and comply to safety practices;
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with customers, employees, and supervisors.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Driver's License (Required)
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, child protective services registry check, driving record check and pre-employment medical evaluation to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs may be subject to a weekly testing requirement. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1 to 3 years of experience performing maintenance activities to parks using skid-steers with attachments, tractor with attachments, riding mowers, small equipment experience with chainsaws, weed-trimmers, edger's, blowers, walk-behind mowers. Experience with the repair and maintenance of outdoor maintenance equipment such as mowers, tractors, and landscape equipment. Experience with cleaning parks and their amenities (Picnic shelter, outdoor grills).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift 50 lbs. Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time. Ability to work in variable weather conditions while performing physical labor. Ability to traverse uneven ground. Ability to bend, twist, turn, stand, sit, and stoop. Ability to operate motor vehicle and trailer. Ability to operate grounds equipment. Ability to climb on and off equipment..
