DEI Lead Compliance InvestigatorThe George Mason University, Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), invites applications for the position of DEI Lead Compliance Investigator. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.In order to facilitate a new investigative model for student, faculty, and staff complaints of sexual harassment and misconduct (including sexual assault, sexual exploitation, interpersonal violence stalking, sexual or gender-based harassment, retaliation, and complicity) in accordance with University Policy 1202: Sexual and Gender-Based Harassment and Other Interpersonal Violence; and complaints of discrimination and harassment in compliance with federal and state laws, executive orders, and University Policy 1201: Non-Discrimination Policy, it is essential that the university hire Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Investigators to serve in this capacity.About the Position:The position of DEI Lead Compliance Investigator will work collaboratively with colleagues in DEI and across campus to ensure university compliance with applicable laws prohibiting discrimination. Reporting to the Senior Title IX Coordinator, the successful candidate will serve a critical role in the university's response to reported incidents of prohibited gender-based discrimination, harassment and retaliation, conducting formal investigations of sexual harassment and misconduct cases involving students and employees. Specific responsibilities include the following:Supervise and conduct neutral investigations of reported incidents of all forms of discrimination on the basis of sex or gender, including sexual harassment, gender-based harassment, sexual assault, interpersonal violence, stalking, sexual exploitation, retaliation and complicity primarily involving Mason students, faculty and staff;Oversee the flow of intake meetings, the gathering of evidence, and strategically develop investigative plans;As Lead Investigator, complete investigations via interviewing parties and witnesses;Oversee the preparation of and create clear, well-reasoned investigative reports;Ensure that Investigators, both internal and external, maintain accurate and thorough records of the investigatory process;Coordinate with Senior Title IX Coordinator in DEI response to reported incidents of all forms of sexual harassment to ensure consistent and appropriate response to all reported incidents;Keep abreast of current state and federal laws and trends regarding Title IX, VAWA, Title VII, and other related legal requirements;Assist the University AVP for Equity and Access Services with the overall prevention, response, and investigations surrounding Title IX and Title VII matters, and other duties as assigned; andProvide onboarding, training, and support to Title IX and EO/VII investigative efforts.Required Qualifications:An advanced degree or a combination of education/training and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree;Demonstrated professional experience (generally 2+ years) conducting formal complaint investigations, preferably involving issues of alleged sexual harassment or relevant experience that transfers and is specific to investigations;Demonstrated ability to accurately analyze and apply legal and policy standards to specific factual situations;Demonstrated experience in supervision of strategic processes such as investigation with ability to develop detailed plans that foster timely completion of cases;Demonstrated ability to handle a significant caseload, manage multiple deadlines, and maintain detailed records;Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in written communications, including the ability to convey relevant information in clearly written reports;Demonstrated ability to work successfully both independently and collaboratively;Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with individuals from underrepresented groups with understanding and sensitivity to experiences of individuals from diverse backgrounds; andDemonstrated ability to deal with sensitive and/or stressful situations in a professional, confidential, and trauma informed manner.Preferred Qualifications:Experience supervising and conducting investigations of cases involving sexual harassment, sexual assault, interpersonal violence, stalking, sexual exploitation, retaliation or complicity, as well as EO and Title VII cases with multiple respondents and/or complainants;Experience conducting investigations of cases involving discrimination and harassment;Experience working in or with institutions of higher education, including experience working with both students and employees;Experience with higher education administrative adjudication processes for students and employees; andExperience developing and presenting training, preferably on prohibited sexual harassment and discrimination issues.
