Description
The Director, Exhibits serves as a senior member of the Convention and Meetings team and helps support and implement strategic and operational efficiencies to benefit the member engagement and event experience objectives of the Association focused on the exhibit hall. The Director, Exhibits leads the Exhibits Team in directing and managing business operations and relationships, to effectively manage and grow the ASHA Exhibit Hall as an integral part of the Annual Convention. The position requires expertise in the logistics and management of large, citywide events with integrated education/learning events and exhibit hall. The position requires strong strategic and operational acumen for current and future years, as well as strong project and process management for short- and long-term initiatives. This position is expected to direct and grow the Association's exhibitions and ensure best-in class operational management and experience for commercial exhibitors. The ASHA Exhibit Hall has representation of more than 300 external exhibitors, member tables, and 40+ internal stakeholders. 
This position is responsible for coaching the associate directors, with dual responsibilities of exhibitor retention and new sales growth. The Director, Exhibits guides and directs research and outreach, logistical arrangements, contracts, and vendor relations; identifies cost-savings; and produces a quality exhibition that ensures an exemplary experience for members and exhibitors alike. The position is responsible for assessing trends for exhibitions, including new technologies used by service contractors and exhibition vendors. The Director, Exhibits works collaboratively to implement comprehensive marketing and promotional strategies and materials for attracting attendees to the exhibit hall, participates in future years’ site visits and contract review and has significant responsibility for forecasting and budgeting. 
Travel is required throughout the year. 
 

Responsibilities

  1. Direct and manage all operational and implementation efforts to produce successful and thriving exhibit halls for the association. Identify, contract, and direct related partner vendors in advance and on site. Negotiate and administer appropriate contracts with vendors who provide services for the exhibition and annual convention, including but not limited to decorator service, security, floral, lead retrieval, electrical, first aid, and telecommunications.
  2. Ensure budgetary management and efficiency, and risk mitigation. Ensure growth of non-dues revenue for the Association, directing key staff on trends, research, and sales strategies.
  3. Monitor and recommend enhancements to systems, processes, tools, policies, and customer service standards for Exhibits and commercial engagement; bring new, and best-in-class ideas and trends or policies to the Association practices
  4. As a senior team member, the Director will provide consultation and partner with National Office staff on engagement and growth strategies across association relative to commercial members and partners that maximize relationships and impact and value for members, while improving efficiency, productivity, and cost-effectiveness.  Ensure team members can effectively provide guidance and assistance as requested, to national office staff with responsibility for specialized exhibit presence.
  5. In conjunction with Director, Sr. Convention and Meetings other team leaders develop and implement overall growth strategy for association’s Convention, and specific to exhibits opportunities, focusing on new opportunities and markets, new tools and offerings, and improved efficiencies.
  6. Direct Associate Director, Exhibit Sales regarding research and plans to sell exhibit space to companies that have products and/or services for ASHA members or new markets. Provide oversight to Associate Director of Exhibits regarding plans for exhibits at Association conferences, separate from Convention.
  7. Advise and collaborate with adjacent departments (sponsorships, other assets) on best practices, policies, fulfillment options, and implementation of best practices. Provide ASHA staff with guidance and recommendations to meet their needs to inform and engage ASHA members through their exhibit presence.
  8. Direct and oversee all on-site management of the Convention exhibit hall, including supervision, coaching, and training of staff, vendor partners and temporary personnel.

Qualifications
Knowledge Typically Acquired Through

  • BA/BS degree in related field, or extensive, progressive responsibilities; CEM certification preferred.
  • At least 5 to 7 years’ experience in exhibit sales and operations 
  • Supervisory, coaching experience required

Scope and Depth of Technical Skills/Knowledge

  • Accomplished industry professional with excellent knowledge and comprehension of large Association Exhibits and event destination and facilities analysis, logistics and management of events from conception to completion
  • Demonstrated understanding of floor plans and square footage for exhibit halls
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, interpret, and report statistical data
  • Demonstrated ability to sell and service a major trade show
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate contracts with vendors and exhibitors
  • Ability to understand and interpret reports to forecast revenue accurately
  • Ability to evaluate ROI, cost-effectiveness, and conduct cost analyses
  • Exceptional project and process management skills; ability to use multi-tasking skills to prioritize and oversee multiple actions or events concurrently
  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly and succinctly in a variety of settings
  • Ability to learn and implement new software applications with relative ease
