UX Design Strategist, Principal Associate - Commercial Banking Design Team

It's a great time to join our Capital One Commercial Design Team and work for a growing, top 10 Commercial Bank in the US. Our design team solves complex problems at the forefront of rethinking how internal associates get their jobs done and how we service our customers. If you are passionate about human centered design methods and a storyteller who embraces rolling up your sleeves to understand the interplay in processes and people we would love to hear from you.

We are currently seeking a Design Strategist to join our team to help connect the processes, applications, and people across our end-to-end services to build clarity across the organization. We want to talk to you if you have proven experience in leading a project, creating the approach, managing scope and ambiguous project boundaries. You understand what it takes to build something truly desirable for users, viable for the business and operationally and technically feasible.

In this role, you'll be engaging regularly with various tech, data science, product teams and other stakeholders across the organization. So, communication and documentation of your work are key here. You are a team player who thrives in a collaborative environment. You're a good, honest partner who doesn't hold back in seeking input and insights from others while offering constructive criticism and sharing your knowledge openly.

Our broader commercial design team champions a thriving environment of collaboration, authenticity and healthy critique, in which we honor diversity of thought, create a culture of belonging, and elevate one another across the disciplines of the design craft.

Who You Are:

  • A Curious Researcher: You thrive on conducting research, synthesizing qualitative and quantitative data and connecting dots that lead to compelling, easy to understand insights and opportunities to dig deeper.
  • A Strategic, Creative Problem-Solver: You're comfortable in ambiguity and passionate about finding clarity. You have a deep conceptual understanding of how to design for different mental models (and how to discover/define those models). You have a strategic, methodical approach that blends design thinking with service design
  • A Storyteller: You're able to develop clear and persuasive stories about your work that you share with a wide range of audiences, including business partners and stakeholders. You're able to present research findings and design concepts to designers and product partners.
  • A Successful Balancer: You can balance multiple projects and take initiative when team members need help. You're able to keep track of your work, manage your time efficiently and communicate scheduling with your manager and the broader team.
  • A Thoughtful Solutioner: You're a Designer who's worked with large organizations on B2B and B2C solutions and you know how to untangle the complexities. You're a fierce end user advocate who doesn't overlook organizational direction or business needs. You know how to evaluate and interpret stakeholder & customer feedback and requests and balance them against true user needs.

What You'll Do:

You'll be asked to handle a variety of responsibilities, including:

Collaboration & Connection
  • Collaborating with technology, product, and business teams to uncover customer and business needs - then translating them into intuitive and engaging digital experiences
  • Unpacking complex ideas into understandable concepts that evolve and enhance the product experience
  • Advocating for the customer through human centered design methodologies (like design research, workflows, process diagrams, service blueprinting, collaborative work session design and facilitation) to strategically define ideal experiences for both internal and external users
  • Championing prioritization of design-centered product enhancements grounded in research and analysis, such as design thinking and service design methodologies
  • Connecting with design community peers by learning, sharing, and teaching

Discovery & Delivery
  • Supporting early product definition by participating in and driving discovery activities that identify operational processes, pain points, and opportunities
  • Demonstrated interest and aptitude in service design methods such as service blueprints, journey maps, system maps and stakeholder maps
  • Demonstrated interest in and aptitude for information architecture

Participate in end-to-end product and experience by:
  • Conducting research to understand existing business processes and customer needs
  • Defining opportunities through usability and empathy studies
  • Visualizing existing and future-state digital and in-person experiences, identifying opportunities and solutions for improvement and experimentation
  • Creating process and user flows, journey maps, interaction models, and other artifacts that illustrate key front-of-stage and back-of-stage interactions
  • Creating new standards to contribute to our internal design system, best practices, and guidelines
  • Supporting effective storytelling and presentation of visual concepts to various stakeholders

Basic Qualifications

  • At least 4 years of experience in service design, design strategy, human-centered design, design thinking tools and methods, or related field
  • Bachelor's degree or military experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree, trainings, or certifications in Design Strategy, HCI, or related design fields
  • Background in psychology, anthropology, sociology, data science, HCI or design
  • Experience designing for large, complex enterprise environments
  • Experience working in an Agile environment with Product and Tech partners
  • Strong knowledge of product design processes
  • Familiarity with design and prototyping tools, such as: Figma, Sketch, Invision and/or Adobe Creative Suite
  • Familiarity with working in an established design system
