Job Announcement

Installs, maintains and repairs complex industrial electrical equipment and systems in wastewater pump stations. Works in the field, diagnosing and resolving complex electrical problems on a wide variety of rotating, moving and heavy equipment including high voltage distribution centers, motor controllers, pump, generators, presses, lighting systems and underground cable. Troubleshoots, repairs and installs variable frequency drives (VFD's). Performs diagnostic work up to the programmable logic controllers (PLC) and the digital control systems (DCS) lode. Performs predictive and preventive maintenance in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations on electrical equipment. Creates work orders, requisitions equipment and parts. Performs work in a safe manner according to all regulations; participates in safety training and reports unsafe conditions.

Illustrative Duties

  • Troubleshoots high voltage industrial equipment, control and power system failures to determine the cause and corrective action required;
  • Performs journey level tasks in the maintenance and repair of 3-phase and single phase electrical equipment;
  • Performs inspections of distribution centers, motor control centers and other electrical control panels and equipment;
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems and equipment up to 5000 volts and 4000 amps;
  • Makes necessary repairs and replacements, and tests effectiveness of corrective action;
  • Troubleshoots, repairs and/or installs main switchboards, main and branch circuit breakers, disconnects and wiring devices such as switches, convenience receptacles and dedicated receptacles, possibly without the aid of a blueprint or schematic because of equipment age;
  • Performs predictive and preventive maintenance in accordance with manufacturer recommendations on electrical equipment;
  • Creates work orders and documents;
  • Assists in maintaining records and inventory of repair and replacement parts and supplies to ensure availability of parts to minimize down-time of equipment;
  • Utilizes Computerized Maintenance Management system and/or Enterprise Asset Management system to monitor, create and close out work orders;
  • Utilizes Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems to troubleshoot electrical problems;
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and installs Variable Frequency Drives;
  • Utilizes Variable Frequency Drives and Programmable Logic Controllers to troubleshoot and make repairs;
  • Performs routine start-up and testing of emergency generators;
  • May serve as a lead over Industrial Electrician I's;
  • Effectively communicates with customers, employees and supervisors;
  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;
  • Reports and monitors unsafe working conditions;
  • Complies with safety competencies.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Journey level knowledge of the standards, practices and equipment of the electrical trade;
  • Journey level knowledge of applicable county, state and national electrical, NFPA and safety codes;
  • Working knowledge of computers, Variable Frequency Drives, Programmable Logic Controllers, Computerized Maintenance Management and/or Enterprise Management Systems and Supervisor Control and Data Acquisition systems and diagnostic measures;
  • Working knowledge of safety regulations and procedures as well as common hazards associated with working with electricity;
  • Working knowledge of supply and policy and procedures;
  • Ability to distinguish different color wiring;
  • Ability to read and interpret diagrams, schematics, blue prints and manuals;
  • Ability to use a computer;
  • Ability to lead other employees;
  • Ability to work in confined spaces;
  • Ability to comprehend confined space training;
  • Ability to comprehend and comply to safety practices;
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with customers, employees and supervisors.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the following:
graduation from high school, or a GED issued by a state department of education or equivalent; successful completion of an approved electrician's apprentice program and four years of experience as an industrial electrician.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Journeyman Electrician's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and a medical examination to the satisfaction of the employer prior to appointment.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience using computers
  • Work experience in an wastewater collection setting or similar environment
  • Experience working as a lead worker
  • Effective oral communication skills
  • Strong customer service skills

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Able to lift 50 pounds. Drive 1/2, 3/4 & 1 ton utility truck and operate hoisting equipment. Stooping and extended standing. Frequent exposure to loud noises and rare exposure to airborne substances, routine climbing. Ability to distinguish colors. Has to enter confined spaces w/weight restriction of 310 lbs. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
