Principal Associate, CDFI Lending

The CDFI Lending Principal Associate will play a key role in Capital One's Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) program. As a Lending Associate, you will support the full spectrum of activities associated with a well-managed, high impact program. Specifically, you will apply your analytical, process management, and research skills to identify, research, onboard, and manage lending relationships with leading CDFIs across Capital One's footprint. The Lending Associate will identify and execute on opportunities to advance the objectives stated in Capital One's Socioeconomic Mobility mission, including considerations to promote racial equity.

Specific responsibilities will include:
  • Research and evaluate loan packages (renewals and new originations) for underwriting and approval, and present facilities to underwriters
  • Work with internal partners to track loans from submission to closing and funding
  • Analyze data on uses of loan proceeds and document community impact of investments, and help craft stories that illustrate socioeconomic mobility outcomes
  • Conduct ongoing research and track trends and needs in the CDFI industry, programs at peer institutions and recommendations community advocates to inform strategy and program design, including:
    • Supporting business development by leveraging internal and external sources to inform recommendations for new originations


Candidate Qualities:
  • Loan packaging experience, especially CDFIs or nonprofit borrowers
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a proven track record of problem solving
  • Knowledge of community development (e.g. affordable housing, small business development) lending, the Community Reinvestment Act, and Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Ability to prioritize work appropriately even when operating on tight deadlines
  • Works well with a diverse set of stakeholders with good critical thinking, organization and planning skills
  • Ability to manage and complete multiple projects and programs concurrently


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or military experience
  • At least two years of underwriting, community development, nonprofit, or government agency experience in community development or capital programs
  • At least two years of experience working with spreadsheets and creating presentations using G Suite or similar tools
  • At least two years of project or process management experience


Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills
  • Knowledge of and experience with CDFIs
  • Knowledge of affordable housing development and/or small business lending
  • Available sample of candidate's analytic and writing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within the context of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate others to achieve client and deal team goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify obstacles and quickly create solutions
