Student Support Specialist, MASI & EFP George Mason University's Disability Services (DS) invites applicants for the Student Support Specialist position for the Mason Autism Support Initiative (MASI) and the Executive Functioning Program (EFP). George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.The Mason Autism Support Initiative (MASI) - a program offered through DS - offers individualized, comprehensive social and academic support to motivated Mason students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in order to guide them through the transition into university life, and assist them in building skills necessary for success in the university environment and beyond. MASI encourages the development of self-advocacy and college-level independent living skills by providing individual and group support within a collaborative model.The Executive Functioning Program (EFP) provides individualized services beyond standard accommodations for students diagnosed with disabilities related to executive functioning skills. EFP offers academic coaching to students within the program to develop skills in time management, organization, self-advocacy, and independence.Responsibilities:The Student Support Specialist is a full-time, benefitted staff position and will report to, and work closely with the MASI/EFP Director. Duties include:Serve as Learning Strategist/Learning Coach supporting assigned students with various aspects of university life with increased focus on academic and career-related skills. This includes implementation of strategies and development of skills in self-advocacy, time management, organization, planning/prioritizing, studying, goal-setting, problem-solving, self-monitoring, and decision-making;Assist and model effective communication with faculty, classmates, and peers;Collaboratively identify and address social needs of students and support navigation of challenging situations;Assist with accessing and utilizing campus resources;Assist with coordination and collaboration with university faculty and staff, departments, and community organizations as needed;Co-facilitate MASI/EFP informational sessions, as needed;Assist with internal and external programming, presentations, and table fairs;Co-facilitate on-going professional development;Collect and maintain record of MASI/EFP student fee payments and reimbursements;Create/update spreadsheets on student information and schedules;Schedule all MASI/EFP related meetings (student interviews, parent/student meetings, campus stakeholders);Serve as point of contact for prospective families and community members;Maintain record of prospective students;Coordinate meeting room locations for Learning Strategists/Learning Coaches;Purchase supplies/food for program; maintain record of receipts and payment log; reconcile cash and financial statements;Coordinate MASI/EFP orientation room location, food order, and RSVP list;Keep record of yearly academic and program-related statistics;Maintain and update swipe access for students and staff into the MASI lounge;Oversee student planning and implementation of monthly social events including coordinating logistics of monthly social events: location, transportation, fees, purchasing, and attendance;Assist with other administrative duties, as needed.Required Qualifications:The successful candidate will have an understanding of disabilities, particularly Autism and disabilities related to executive functioning, as well as:Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;Demonstrated skill in effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication;Ability to work effectively in a team environment;A demonstrated basic comfort level when interacting with individuals with disabilities;Ability to work with significant attention to detail.Preferred Qualifications:Experience working within the field of higher education;Experience working with college students, and knowledge of issues regarding the transition from high school to postsecondary education for students with disabilities;Experience working with college-level individuals with ASD and/or executive functioning disabilities within the college/university environment.
