Managing Editor, American Heritage Magazine

American Heritage Magazine, the 72-year-old magazine of American history, seeks a Managing Editor to work on a wide range of tasks including article acquisition, tracking content in the works, line editing, illustration research, posting articles on the website, writing captions and callouts, writing news items and blog posts, and social media. The Managing Editor will also help with its sister publication, Invention & Technology, the only popular magazine of the history of innovation and invention. He or she will report directly to the Editor-in-Chief, Edwin S. Grosvenor.

PLEASE NOTE:
This position is NOT remote-only. It requires at least occasional meetings in our Washington, DC office near Dupont Circle. The successful candidate will have at least several years of experience working in serious journalism, and will have some familiarity with American political, military, and cultural history.

American Heritage launched in 1949 and has won many prestigious journalism awards over its distinguished history. It has published many of the famous historians of the last 70 years such as Douglas Brinkley, Joseph Ellis, David Hackett Fischer, Henry Louis Gates, John F. Kennedy, Pauline Maier, David McCullough, and James McPherson. The magazine’s 70th Anniversary issue included original writing by numerous Pulitzer Prize-winning authors.

American Heritage won or was a finalist for a National Magazine Award thirteen times. Although it was forced to suspend print publication following the recession, it was relaunched in digital format in 2017. Its website, www.americanheritage.com, offers 8,000 articles written by leading historians and writers and is widely used by teachers and students.
