Director of External Relationships, LECThe George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School's Law & Economic Center (LEC) is searching for a Director of External Relationships. The LEC is a national center for research and education that focuses on the timely and relevant economic analysis of legal and public policy issues. To fulfill its educational mission, the LEC provides dynamic training programs in law and economics to audiences including federal and state judges, state attorneys general, congressional staff members, academics, and other legal professionals.George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.About the Position:The Director of External Relationships for the Law & Economics Center will be responsible for implementing a comprehensive fundraising and communication strategy for the LEC that will annually provide sufficient funds to support the comprehensive work of the LEC.The Director of External Relationships' responsibilities will include the day-to-day management of the LEC's development activities, as well as preparing effective donor and prospect communications and publications; drafting proposals, interim and annual reporting, and gift acknowledgments; managing and maintaining the LEC's information regarding donors and prospects; monitoring reporting and agreement schedules; providing regular updates to LEC executive management; researching and identifying prospects; and scheduling and organizing development meetings with donors and potential donors, participating when appropriate. This position will oversee the development-related duties of the LEC's executive assistant.Working with the Executive Director, the Director of External Relationships will oversee and execute the strategic planning and all logistical elements annually required by the LEC to meet its fundraising needs. In addition, this position will:Manage LEC's mission and flagship initiatives in coordination with the leadership team;Oversee the internal and external events associated with the mission of the LEC;Oversee the day-to-day operations and staff of the LEC as related to the fundraising and communication strategy;Supervise the work of junior staff and LEC assistants;Establish and enforce center-wide guidelines for regular and accurate division reporting on each division's activities; use these reports to effectively communicate the LEC's successes to donors and prospective donors through regular communication and reporting;Implement a project management system with monthly, quarterly, annual, and multi-year objectives; complete and submit progress reports for leadership review;Coordinate with the LEC's communication team to develop fundraising publications;Serve as the primary writer of the LEC's development function - writing responsibilities to include proposals and reports;Maintain data integrity for the LEC;Provide revenue and cost analysis when requested;Draft and develop timely and high-quality proposals and progress reports to existing and potential funders;Track LEC data for reporting requirements, grant agreements, and fund arrival;Research and evaluate data to identify prospective donors;Work with the leadership team in the development of a strategic $10 million + budget for programs; operate within budget and provide tracking and reporting of projected and actual expenditures;Collaborate with Development staff sharing best practices, current challenges and opportunities, and assist in framing overall development strategy.Required Qualifications:Master's Degree in related field or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience;Demonstrated experience (generally 5+ years preferred) working within a fundraising or membership development operation;Experience working with senior executives, volunteers, senior administration, and faculty;Demonstrated familiarity with law and economics as a field of study, as well as the ability to discuss the importance of law and economics to legal education and the rule of law;Skill in the use of computers and databases;Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and internet research;Skill in effective organizational and time management;Skill in effective written and oral communication;Skill in providing effective internal and external customer service;Demonstrated skill in effective interpersonal communication; ability to work well with diverse groups of constituents and colleagues;Skill in building relationships and relationship management;Ability to demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills in various social and professional settings to ensure positive relationships;Ability to work independently with limited supervision, as well as part of a collaborative team environment;Ability to perform work with significant attention to detail and follow-through;Ability to manage many projects simultaneously and a demonstrated record of completing assignments;Ability to demonstrate the aptitude to represent the University in a highly professional and effective manner;Demonstrated 10+ years' experience in the management of external relations that involved communication and frequent contact with senior-level management of organizations, donors, and professional contacts necessary for executive leadership to maintain on a regular basis; experience in managing a staff responsible for communication with these constituents;Ability to multi-task in a dynamic environment; ability to be self-starting, entrepreneurial, and creative; express and recognize ideas and opportunities, and communicate goals and objectives clearly;Highly self-motivated with strong organizational skills and discipline to regularly set and achieve work goals with a high level of accountability;Ability to synthesize complex material;Must be willing and able to work irregular schedules to include some late nights and weekends;Ability to travel independently.Preferred Qualifications:Experience in higher education and/or industry;Professional effective speaker comfortable with public speaking engagements.
