The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is seeking a Fire Protection and Alarming Engineer for the Office of Engineering and Architecture (ENGA). The successful candidate for this role will be part of the Communications and Network Systems team, which designs various systems such as Fire Alarm, Tunnel Smoke Detection, Access Control, Intrusion Detection, CCTV, Gas Detection, Intercom, and Public Address for WMATA.
This is a highly responsible professional engineering work of a complex nature. The candidate will play a pivotal role in providing designs of the fire alarm system, ensuring traceability to design practices through value engineering, implementation, and operation of fire alarm systems. There will also be emphasis on system integration. The ideal candidate shall be a self-starter, possess strong communication skills, and be result- focused, knowledge of computer aided design programs for fire alarm system. Prior experience in rail and transit is preferred, but not required. Understanding of NFPA 72 and NFPA 130.
In this versatile role, you will bring your passion, experience, and expertise in Fire Protection and Alarm system architectures and implementations to deliver new and modifications to the fire alarm system designs to address fire alarm code updates of WMATA facilities. This to ensure system compliance with fire alarm requirements and standards, drives innovations, and sustainability to increase system reliability performance. You will be part an energetic team of Engineers, including consultants and will be working in a collaborative environment that values diverse perspective and continuous learning within the team and across WMATA departments.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) operate rail, bus, and paratransit services in 1,500-square mile area that includes the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.
Minimum Qualifications :
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Fire Protection or Fire Sciences Engineering. Seven (7) years of design experience, progressively responsible, comprehensive experience in the fire protection engineering field to include sprinkler design, fire detection, ventilation control, and engineering project management experience is required.
Or, an equivalent combination of twelve (12) years of experience and education in a related engineering field may be acceptable.
Certification/Licensure:
Professional Engineer (PE) required in one of the following jurisdictions: District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia.
Possession of a current District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia motor vehicle operator's license issued from jurisdiction of residence.
Medical Group:
Ability to satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this job. Must be able to perform the essential functions of this job either with or without reasonable accommodation(s).
Job Summary/Duties :
Supervises WMATA mechanical engineers, technicians and consultants in fire protection related assignments.
Coordinates and reviews drawings and specifications of fire protection systems to include sprinkler, deluge, clean agent, standpipe, pre-action, dry pipe, early suppression fast response, hydrants, fire pumps, fire dampers, smoke dampers, smoke evacuation management, fire stopping, smoke sensors, fire sensors, pull stations, alarm strobes, annunciator panels, safety, and related systems.
Oversees and confers with the General Engineering Consultants (GEC) and Project Engineers concerning modifications to fire protection systems. Provides technical direction to GEC personnel when problems requiring deviation from standard practices occur.
Develops or oversees the development of test procedures for fire protection systems. Reviews and checks principal calculations and assumption affecting the design and subsequent operation of fire protection systems required of WMATA'S transit operations.
Maintains continuous overview of the fire protection systems placed in WMATA's operations to determine the adequacy and effectiveness of fire protection engineering designs. Makes attempts to resolve actual and potential problems that develop.
Prepares or reviews feasibility studies, special reports and investigations on problems that have to do with fire protection and fire and life safety systems, their related user needs and requirements. Prepares cost estimates as required.
Stays abreast of state-of-the-art developments in the fire protection engineering field and applies those techniques and procedures to benefit WMATA's construction program and operations reconstruction work. Conducts periodic visits to field sites to provide advice and to conduct reviews.
Reviews fire protection equipment and system design criteria, developing new standards and guides as appropriate.
Performs other duties as assigned.
