Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking an experienced and thoughtful comments editor to oversee the moderation of comments on articles published to our website. This editor will ensure that there is healthy and constructive dialogue happening around our journalism and facilitate conversations among our audience members and our journalists.

The editor in this position will work with others on the Newsroom Talent and Community Development team to create and monitor conversations driven by Washington Post journalism, playing a key role in selecting the stories we want to build robust conversations around. They will work to preserve the intelligence and integrity of the dialogue around our stories while constantly thinking about how to make a more productive, engaging and interesting environment for conversations, prioritizing innovation and experimentation.

The ideal candidate will have excellent news judgment, be open to many points of view, and have a firm understanding of what fosters the type of smart and curious conversation that our audiences seek when coming to The Washington Post. They should have a strong sense of the ways in which community engagement and social conversations online drive audience growth and loyalty, and command of trends and opportunities in this space. The role requires clear written and verbal communication skills and a keen sense of when a comment or conversation is threatening or simply no longer productive. A minimum of three years of newsroom experience is required, and previous comment moderation experience is preferred.

Candidates should upload a résumé and cover letter to our jobs portal. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 09/05/2022 will be prioritized. The cover letter should be addressed to Director of Newsroom Talent and Community Development Michelle Jaconi and Head of Audience Strategy and Growth Erika Allen.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.
