Job Summary/Company:

Sparks Group and one of the largest Associations in the world based in Washington, DC have partnered to find a Director of Meetings & Exhibits. As the Director of Meetings &Exhibits, you will provide executive level direction and comprehensive support to the entire Meetings and Exhibits Team as well as the senior executive staff and its Board of Directors. You will advise on the development and execution of events and how to create value for the attendees to aid in the recruitment and retention of members while expanding the global reach of the organization. You will bring knowledge of the events global industry and can identify top-noticed vendor partners to aid in the successful execution of events. The Director of Meetings & Exhibits should also be an excellent negotiator and well-versed in union and labor requirements associated with holding events in various cities.

Director of Meetings & Exhibits Responsibilities:
  • Provides executive direction for the Meetings unit including developing strategic, operating and financial plans that effectively support successful meetings. Transitioning the organization from a primarily in-person event host to a hybrid event host.
  • Manages budgets for national meetings, regional meetings, and specialty conferences paying particular attention to financial controls, cost containment issues, income, and future forecasting.
  • Responsible for people management to include talent acquisition, performance management, professional development, and succession planning.
  • Responsible for the successful execution of two annual hybrid meetings that routinely attract in excess of 30,000 attendees, generate over $10 million in revenue and over 20,000 technical papers; the successful execution of 8-10 regional meetings per year; 3-5 specialty conferences; and events that allow for member and constituent engagement and recognition.
  • Works in collaboration with the communications and marketing units to coordinate successful publicity and marketing of meetings worldwide.
  • Collaborates across the organization and with various volunteer and stakeholder groups on the successful executive of events.
  • Responsible for benchmarking best practices in meetings and event planning in a hybrid environment to ensure that the organization becomes and remains first in class relative to hosting hybrid events.

Director of Meetings & Events Qualifications:
  • College degree in Business Management, Hospitality Management, advanced degree or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of related meetings and event planning experience including managing large and diverse groups.
  • Experience with strategic planning, budget management, logistics, negotiations, vendor relationships and project management.
  • Worldwide meetings and event planning expertise a must.
