Medical Supervisor

An Overview

The City of Alexandria is recruiting for a Medical Supervisor for our Opioid Treatment Program (OTP). This Virginia-Licensed Physician provides overall medical leadership and direct services to the program and helps lead the charge to address opioid-related stigma and end the opioid epidemic. The OTP Medical Supervisor is responsible for overseeing a multidisciplinary staff who work to ensure clients receiving Medication Assisted Treatment are provided evidence-based, prompt, and compassionate care. Our nationally recognized program has been repeatedly highlighted by State and Federal agencies as a Center of Excellence; we are recruiting for a Medical Supervisor who brings this same level of excellence to our program.

What You Should Bring

We are seeking a Virginia-licensed Physician with experience providing direct medical care in treating clients diagnosed with an Opioid Use Disorder. The ideal candidate will bring an understanding of the medical/clinical management of care related to Medication Assisted Treatment, understand the intersection between the various regulatory bodies to conform with state and federal practice and guidelines, and have a passion for helping clients with an opioid use disorder and fighting the opioid epidemic.

Example of Duties:
  • Provides overall medical leadership and direct service in the Opioid Treatment Program, including prescribing medications, conducting medical exams, reviewing labs, conferring with clinical staff on treatment plans and client progress, making referrals to other medical services as needed, and documenting all clinical activities in an electronic medical record.
  • Oversees clinical and medical aspects of Pharmacist and Nursing Supervisor activities and prepares emergency medications in absence of pharmacy staff.
  • Provides medical consultation for group home clients who are under the care of a primary care physician and reside in a department-operated group home.
  • Provides training on medications to treat opioid use disorder, substance withdrawal and other topics for staff.
  • Provides informational presentations for clients, staff or community groups as needed.
  • Performs community drug monitoring for Diversion Control Procedures, including PMDP.
  • Maintains Opioid Treatment Program policies to continuously meet all regulatory and CARF standards.
  • Provides on-call coverage when needed to the Opioid Treatment Program and department-run substance use residential program.
  • Maintains clinic and pharmacy licensure with Drug Enforcement Agency and the State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Other duties as assigned.

General Qualifications:
  • Thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of medicine.
  • Thorough knowledge of the diagnosis and specialized treatment of addiction.
  • Thorough knowledge of current developments in the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals with substance use disorders, particularly opioid use disorder.
  • An ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, clients, their families, and with lay and professional groups.
  • Possession of a certificate of registration to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia, possession of a certificate of registration with the Federal Drug. Enforcement Administration, and the State Board of Pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Successful completion of Federal criminal records check, child abuse registry and pre-employment drug screen.

Schedule: Work hours will be determined upon offer of employment based on program needs. The program is open Monday through Saturday, 7:00AM - 3:30PM. As an Essential Employee, you along with your team will be expected to coordinate care for clients during times when the city may be closed (holidays, inclement weather, etc.).

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Graduation from an accredited school of medicine with a degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD); completion of a one year internship at an approved hospital; current DEA Registrations for Schedules II - IV and for buprenorphine; two years of experience in substance abuse treatment; two years of experience post internship in general medicine; thorough knowledge of the modern principles and practices of medicine, in diagnosis and current specialized treatment of drug addiction and rehabilitation, psychiatry and pharmacology; considerable experience in responsible medical positions including some experience in the rehabilitation of drug addicts; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; possession of a certificate of registration to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and possession of a certificate of registration with the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

Preferred Qualifications

At least five years of experience in direct substance abuse treatment delivery. Five years of experience in general medicine post internship; Board Eligible/Board Certified in Addiction Medicine is a plus with background in general medicine. Also, comfortable using a computer with word processing skills, bilingual ability in English and Spanish, and has possession of SAMHSA Waiver for Suboxone.
