Duties

  • You will independently plan, layout the work to be done, select the proper tools, determine methods/materials to be used, and accomplish the work in accordance with approved methods and accepted trade practices.
  • You will interrupt blueprints, drawings, specifications, surveys, work orders, or sketches and decides work methods, processes, techniques and sequencing best suited to complete work.
  • You will install/arrange reinforcement steel or wire mesh to obtain maximum strength, control joints, expansion and contraction joints.
  • You will perform decorative brickwork through placement of brick of different colors to create various designs and patterns.
  • You will ensure courses are laid evenly and that completed work blends with existing brickwork.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • May be assigned to perform tasks in non-trade related fields as an assistant/helper as workload requires.
  • Incumbent may be required to obtain and maintain license for the operation of a forklift other high lift and/or construction equipment.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current respirator certification.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States drivers license.
  • The incumbent is designate as a member of the Facility Spill Response Team and will be required to respond to oil spill emergencies.
  • NAVFAC MIDLANT is a regionalized command. The incumbent serving in this position may at any time be reassigned to a similar position at any site or workstation within the commuting area as a condition of employment.

The job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: THE ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF A MASON WITH OUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION INCLUDING: 1) Lay a variety of brick, block, and stone (e.g. firebrick, structural tile, concrete blocks, glass blocks, terra cotta and artificial and natural stone) to repair items such as partitions, walls, walkways, manholes, boilers, catch basins, chimneys, and fireplaces; 2) Work from oral instructions, blueprints, work orders, and rough sketches to complete assigned tasks; 3) Use a variety of hand and power tools such as trowels, mixers, chisels, hammers, crowbars, brick or skill saws, axes, and picks to remove or prepare walls for repair and cut and shape brick and stone.

This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

A 40 hour work week is typical for this position.

May be required to serve-on call duty on a rotational basis. When on-call, incumbent is required to carry a duty cell phone and duty pager and must remain available to respond on site to after hour emergencies within two hours.

Certain incentives (such as Recruitment, Relocation or Student Loan Repayment) may be authorized to eligible selectees.

Should work be assigned that requires special certification or licensing to perform the work or to use specialized tools or equipment, the incumbent will be required to obtain such certification or licensing and maintain any associated qualification requirements, for example, this position may require Respirator certification.

May be assigned a truck stocked with controlled inventory and consumable materials.

This position may be considered ESSENTIAL and the incumbent will be required to report for duty or held in a duty status to provide support before. during and/ or after special emergency situations, such as, but not limited to, destructive weather (including snow removal), disasters, or periods of increased security threat.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: May be required to perform heavy lifting up to 90 pounds, utilizes assistive devices in carrying bricks, block, stone, mortar, cement, and sand. Work may require extensive standing, walking, bending, and kneeling; may also be required to stand while working and must frequently climb ladders and scaffolds.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed both indoors and outdoors. May be exposed to a variety of weather conditions while outdoors. May be subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds. May be exposed to dust and dirt while mixing mortar and while handling various masonry materials.
