Duties

The Lead Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography) assist with the Home Sleep Testing program, Somnoware, Remote Order Entry System, CPAP clinic, PAP nap clinic and Sleep studies, including assisting with scheduling, patient set up, follow up care, data collection as well as liaising with the technologists, providers, Respiratory Therapists and MSAs.

Major Duties:
  • Assist with the Home Sleep Apnea Testing program by coordinating with other sleep technologists
  • Assist with applications such as the VA's Remote Order Entry System and the Somnoware program in concert with the night time sleep technologists, daytime sleep technologist, the providers and the supervisory sleep technologist.
  • Assist/ conduct / coordinate daytime sleep studies (MSLT and PAP naps)
  • Assist the Respiratory Therapists with coordinating the CPAP clinic
  • Assist with the scheduling of sleep studies, including both home and in-lab studies
  • Serve as a liaison between the sleep technologists, providers, case manager, MSAs, Respiratory Therapy staff and the DME company.
  • Other duties as they are assigned.


Work Schedule: Full time, Monday- Friday 8:00 am- 4:30 pm. Hours of the day tour may change from time to time based on program needs, with occasional weekend duty as well.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G27.
  • Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification highly desired (BRPT) Registration by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists, though is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification highly desired Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications, though is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Preferred Experience:

Experience in VA Remote Order Entry System, Somnoware, Research experience, IT experience, in-patient experience are preferred, but not required

Grade Determinations: GS-09

At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level GS-08, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level.

(a) Experience: Interact fully with the patient and physician to diagnose sleep disorders including those that are uncommon or rare. Conduct full sleep studies including daytime and overnight studies and evaluate the relationship of events, sleep stages, and possible medical conditions which influence or result from events occurring during sleep. Anticipate problems likely to occur during the sleep study and prepare for such situations, make changes in established procedures, or recommend alternative courses of action. Serve as a liaison between interdepartmental and external parties and mentor lower graded technicians.

(b) KSA: In additional to the specialized experience you must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to Polysomnography.

*2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.

3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.

4. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-09.

Physical Requirements: The technologist will perform sleep studies using a variety of sophisticated recording devices and equipment. The technologist may be required to make trips to the patient waiting room, in order to call the patient for their exam. There may be some standing, bending, and carrying of light items, such as carrying paperwork. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
