Job Description

We are looking for a deputy design director to join the News Design team.

This department of visual journalists elevates The Washington Post's content across platforms through innovative storytelling that informs and captivates our readers. Our designers and editors create new editorial brands, thematic packages and story presentations on multiple surfaces, including, mobile apps, newsletters, a printed newspaper, magazine and social media. This award-winning team is unique in the industry for a designer's ability to interact with a story across multiple products while creating presentations that are vibrant and adaptive to meet readers where they are.

The deputy design director's role is to establish greater visual consistency throughout our portfolio and push our editorial aesthetic forward on site, on social platforms and newsletters. This editor will lead multiple designers and editors responsible for our features coverage but will also work throughout our expansive department. The ideal candidate has extensive leadership experience, is a strong collaborator and problem solver, is adaptable and has a vision for how design can drive brand recognition, further storytelling and shape our future.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom and may require night and weekend work.

  • Create and maintain a design style guide for the newsroom to elevate our visual brand and our cohesion on every editorial touchpoint
  • Partner with product and marketing to ensure the team's work aligns with work across the entire organization's design system
  • Work seamlessly with the creative director and fellow deputies responsible for news, news development and platforms to inspire, enable, energize and coach a world-class creative team while cultivating a culture of innovation
  • Support the development of enhanced storytelling presentations through strong collaborative relationships with departments throughout the newsroom
  • Lead art direction that is engaging, and help develop content-driven designs and/or illustrations that are smart, risk-taking and reader-centric

Key qualifications
  • Experience leading cross-disciplinary teams and managing the growth of designers and editors
  • A portfolio of work that demonstrates a strong visual aesthetic, innovative design work and storytelling using a wide-range of approaches - including art direction, typography and use of color
  • Experience building and maintaining brands within large organizations
  • A collaborative spirit and the ability to build strong relationships
  • An aptitude for problem-solving, simplifying and communicating throughout complex visual storytelling challenges
  • Experience in leading work that showcases experimentation and a willingness to push the bounds of storytelling
  • Experience recruiting and retaining talent
  • Experience with art direction and working with freelance artists
