Duties

• You will fabricate and install or remove insulating materials, including asbestos on tanks, boilers, turbines, pumps, pipes, valves, ducts , and other structures to reduce heat loss or absorption.
• You will prevent moisture condensation, reduce sound levels, or retard fires.
• You will identify, collect, process, stabilize, neutralize, consolidate, and/or separate hazardous waste in preparation for disposal.
• You will develop patterns and lay out, cut, form, join, assemble, and installs or remove all types of insulating materials.
• You will plan and lay out the work using parallel and radial line development and the principles of triangulation to prepare patterns, templates, and sketches of the items to be covered.
• You will independently select the martials and equipment to be used.
• You will perform difficult work processes to assemble and form bulk insulation to cover a combination of irregular shaped valves, flanges, tees, ells, and other surfaces not suitable for block pieces.
• You will cover non-supervisory work involved in identifying, collecting, processing, stabilizing, neutralizing, consolidating, and / or separating hazardous waste in preparation for disposal.
• You will be required to respond to chemical or hazardous waste emergencies.
• You will visually examines hazardous waste containers at generation sites for leakage and other indications of deterioration.
• You will assist in the containment and clean up operations resulting from hazardous spills.

Qualifications

The selectee for this position will serve as an Insulator in the Research and Development Services Division within the NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY located in Washington, D.C.

A. The ability to do the work of an Insulator including having performed the majority of the following duties under normal supervision: applying predetermined methods, materials, and installation techniques in accordance with clearly defined drawings, patterns, or templates which are provided in work orders and instructions to assist in the removal and installation of insulation on items and systems such as pipes, ducts, heaters, tanks, and pumps; securing insulation in place with wire, fasteners, and hooks; assisting in the removal of asbestos from some surfaces; reading and interpreting blueprints; performing basic mathematical calculations to determine proper amount of insulation to be used; covering items using prefabricated insulating blocks/sheets; using tools of trades such as knives, rasps, and scissors.

AND

B. The ability to do the work of a Hazardous Waste Disposer including having performed the majority of the following duties under normal supervision: collecting, packaging, and storing hazardous waste; identifying and labeling hazardous waste; performing operator maintenance and repairs on equipment used in handling hazardous waste; and assisting in the response to chemical and hazardous waste emergencies to clean up spills and overflows.
