Investment Associate, Manager

COV has team members in San Francisco, New York and the Washington, DC area at Capital One Headquarters (McLean, VA) who work to identify new opportunities in enterprise tech, big data, cybersecurity, identity, payments, fintech and other sectors.

Some of our investments include: Snowflake, ThoughtSpot, Blend, Cylance, Riskified, Dave and Eightfold.

Who we're looking for:

We seek a highly motivated and energetic Investment Associate to join our Early Stage Venture team. As an important member of the investment team, investment associates spend their time on identification and evaluation of attractive market opportunities, business concept validation, and venture creation. This person maintains a deep understanding of enterprise products and services and has a passion for understanding emerging technologies and trends. This team member is an articulate, professional communicator with the ability to share business and industry knowledge at various levels including the most senior leaders at Capital One. Previous experience or a strong interest in working directly with startup companies and understanding the startup world is highly desired.

The role:

As part of the Early Stage Ventures team, you will work to identify new market opportunities, startups, use cases and technology gaps. You will evaluate the market, perform due diligence on startup solutions, and recommend the right partners to relevant internal stakeholders. The role is a multi-faceted one and requires well-developed financial, technology, strategic, and interpersonal skill sets.

Responsibilities include:

Technology Consulting & Business Development: Work with early stage portfolio companies to develop a deep understanding of their business, technology and product roadmaps. With this understanding, engage Capital One teams across business and technology functions to develop new use cases and partnership opportunities.

Technical Leadership, Communication & Coordination: Develop strong relationships with Capital One business and technology leaders. Help disseminate strategic intelligence and learnings from our venture investing activities throughout Capital One.

External responsibilities include:

Investing: Participate in new venture sourcing, diligence, evaluation, and execution. Collaborate with a broader investment team to deliver on the core venture investment focus of Capital One Ventures.

COV Community Building: Engage with the startup and tech ecosystem to help build relationships with promising CEOs, investors and portfolio companies' target customers. Help build awareness of Capital One and evangelize the COV brand in order to increase our network of relationships, reputation and deal flow.

Internal responsibilities include:

Strategic Communication & Coordination: Develop strong relationships with Capital One business and technology leaders. Understand their strategic priorities, challenges and needs. Serve as a liaison to keep the COV investment team informed of internal priorities, providing ideas and guidance for potential investments. Help disseminate strategic intelligence and learnings from our venture investing activities throughout Capital One.

Innovation and New Venture Creation: Identify and evaluate attractive market opportunities based on internal and external customer and user research. Test, validate and diligence promising business concepts, and advocate for their funding and creation.

Business Development: Work with Early Stage portfolio companies to develop a deep understanding of their business, technology, and product roadmaps. With this understanding, Engage relevant internal sponsors to provide feedback and shape product direction to solve big problems for Capital One.

Due Diligence: Use your understanding of technology, business models and emerging trends to evaluate potential new venture concepts and their ability to deliver strategic value to Capital One. Identify relevant internal technical resources and external consultants, and lead the creation of due diligence artifacts on prospective investments within short timelines.

Qualities of Potential Hire include:
  • Significant experience with and deep understanding of technology infrastructure and software, especially in one or more of COVs' core focus areas: enterprise platforms, software as a service, cloud, big data, cybersecurity, identity, and financial enabling technology
  • Expertise in the evaluation of startups and investment opportunities, including leading due diligence processes
  • Deep knowledge of the financial services industry, including banking, lending and payments
  • Ability to independently design, create, and communicate well-crafted presentations of prescriptive strategies and investment recommendations
  • Knowledge of venture finance, including key metrics, valuation methodologies, capitalization tables, waterfall models, deal structures, and term sheets
  • A track record (professional experience, community organization, writing/blogging, or a personal brand) of passionate involvement in emerging technology
  • Interest in corporate innovation, startups, technology, financial services
  • Significant experience with, prior hands-on experience with product development and deep understanding of technology, especially in areas like big data, analytics, cloud technologies, cybersecurity, identity, etc.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or military experience required
  • At least 3 years of experience in technology, finance, or strategy


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field (Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Operations)
  • 5+ years of experience in either technology, finance (investment banking, investing) or strategy (consulting, business strategy)
