  • Participates in planning, designing, developing, and implementing state-of-the-art data science applications, models, technologies, and guiding principles for data use and analysis
  • Writes and executes program code to perform data processes that is clear and efficient, interprets and analyzes results, and uses data visualization to communicate insights and outcomes to stakeholders
  • Conducts research and statistical analysis on available data, as directed, and presents findings in suitable formats. Alters instructions, methodologies, and/or guidelines, as directed.
  • Collaborates with other team members to support the aggregation of software and hardware technologies required to integrate resources and provide a useful, usable, and enabling framework for programs.
  • Participates in the development of new user interfaces and supports adapting tools for displaying scientific information; implements common data standards and metadata schema for discoverability and interoperability of data.

If hired for this position with the Census Bureau, at its headquarters office located in Suitland, Maryland, you will be expected to temporarily telework to maximum extent while the headquarters building is being renovated. Once permitted to return to the office building, you will be expected to do so within 30 calendar days of receiving notification. At that time, you may be eligible to continue to telework or work remotely two or more days a pay period consistent with the Census Bureau's flexible telework and remote work policies and approval from your supervisor.

Minimum Education Requirement:

A. Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position.


B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.


Specialized Experience: For the GS-12, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes participating in research and statistical analysis on available data and evaluates the effectiveness of statistical programs/applications. Alters instructions, methodologies, and/or guidelines as necessary to achieve program objectives. Develops improved program material and documentation. Develops or presents training to internal or external audiences on data science topics. Participates in the analysis of management information requirements to develop program or administrative reporting systems including the systems specifications, data gathering and analytical techniques, and systems evaluation methodology. Performs queries using various types of database and analytical tools (e.g., SQL Server).


Specialized Experience: For the GS-11, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes analyzing assigned data sources to provide data-driven insights to the organization to streamline processes and evaluate the effectiveness of the program operations in meeting established goals and objectives. Participates in designing, implementing, and evaluating large, complex analytical applications, projects, and studies, applying a combination of computational and machine learning methods to new or Big Data using next generation analytical tools.
