Duties

Candidates selected will fall under one of three shifts:

Day (6:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M.)

Evening (2:00 P.M. to 10:30 P.M.)

Night (10:00 P.M. to 6:30 A.M.), Sunday - Thursday

Major Duties:

The candidates(s) selected will function as a Maintenance Mechanic Worker, assisting journey-level skilled trade workers in general maintenance function as the House Office Buildings (HOB). Candidate(s) will work as a maintenance mechanic worker assisting journey-level mechanics to perform duties in plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Performs tasks to obtain training in the maintenance and repair of the plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning trades.

Air Conditioning

• Assists with preventive maintenance inspections of air conditioning equipment including the various types and sizes of exhaust fans, air conditioning and heating equipment, humidifiers, pneumatic or digital controls, hot water generators and other equipment.
• Assist in gathering and laying out tools and materials for major preventive maintenance jobs.
• Selects the appropriate tools and equipment for minor jobs, blueprints, sketches and technical manuals to understand the functions of the equipment and systems, skill to plan and lay out work and sills to locate faulty parts.
• Changes belts, greases bearings, cleans tanks, exhaust ducts and fans in air conditioning equipment. Changes filters in air handling units and measures, cuts and bends tubing.

Pipefitting/Plumbing

• Plans and lays out work from drawings, blueprints and verbal instructions. Determines the sequence of work, materials and tools to be used.
• Assists journey-level Pipefitters during assembly and screwing or bolting pipe hangers to walls or ceilings.
• Assists in covering exposed sections of o\pipe to prevent freezing or to retain heat in hot water lines. Uses such tools as bract and bit, keyhole saw, chisel and hammer or electric drill.
• Assists journey-level workers by locating piping lines, setting up tools and equipment for use by others, cleaning up work areas after work has been completed and storing tools.
• Helps journey-level workers with the installation and repair of utility, supply and disposal systems, for example, sewage, water, fixtures and equipment.
• Clears simple stoppages from drain pipes
• Inspects all bathrooms to ensure that all fixtures work properly and assists in repairing defective fixtures as necessary.

Shop and Work Site Maintenance

• Works with plumbers and pipefitters and A/C equipment mechanics to perform required maintenance, inspections and repairs. Assists with the assembly, laying out work, hanging of pipe by lifting, carrying and handing tools, fittings and equipment to the journey-level plumber or pipefitter; holding pipe during assembly; and screwing or bolting pipe hangers to walls, ceilings, etc.
• Cuts and threads pope using hacksaw, pipe-cutter and threading machine, the dies of which have been set by a higher grade pipefitter; bends or shapes pipe by applying pressure after placing pipe in bending block; tightens pipe connections and valves; and cuts or drills previously marked holes in walls.
• Assists journey-level A/C equipment mechanics by performing assigned duties of the trade and working with the journey-level workers as instructed.
• Assists mechanics in sorting tools, cleaning the shop, carrying materials and maintaining a safe and clean work site environment.
• Assists journey-level workers in the operation of power tools.
• Clean work areas and keeps work benches clean and orderly and tools and machines lubricated.
• Assists with some difficult tasks, such as ordering and accepting deliveries, counting stock and loading and unloading trucks.

Please Note: This position is temporary, not to exceed 13 months. It is a position that is subject to the project needs of the Agency. Therefore, the appointment could be terminated at any time due to shortage of work or shortage of funds. If project work continues, however, it could be extended beyond the 13 months-time frame at the sole discretion of the Agency.
