Position Objective: Provide services as an Industrial/Engineering Lab Technician in support of the overall functions of the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), within the National Institutes of Health (NIH).IDEAS is a central, on-campus, engineering resource for the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP).IDEAS staff work closely with IRP collaborators to develop novel technologies for laboratory and clinical research. The majority of SPIS activities require first-of-a-kind instrumentation design, software development (both for instrument control and signal analysis), in-house fabrication, and overall collaborative validation in laboratories and clinics. IDEAS is looking for a proactive candidate to assume responsibility for our engineering laboratories and fabrication capabilities, as well as work with our engineers in fabricating, assembling, testing, installing, and debugging a wide range of devices and systems. Duties and Responsibilities: Control of lab operations, including maintenance, organization, and inventory 1 Operate and maintain machinery, such as circuit board plotter, 3D printers, CNC mill, laser cutter, and other fabrication equipment 4 Fabricate and assemble electrical, optical, and mechanical designs 2 Assist engineers with testing, installation, and/or debugging of systems 3 Troubleshoot electronic, optical, and mechanical systems and devices Design and implement small electronic and/or mechanical devices and systems 5 Educate/ensure staff safety compliance for general lab and specific machines Interact with NIH campus investigators and trainees on biomedical research projects Serve as point - person for laboratory meetings and work resulting from impromptu visits from NIH campus staff Basic Qualifications: Minimum Associates degree and/or multi - year related experience or the equivalent; trade/technical school graduate or military avionics/communication training would be looked on favorably At least 3 years of experience as lab or industry technician, or experience in a makerspace environment Experience troubleshooting electronic and mechanical devices and systems Experience prototyping and testing electronic circuits (soldering, understanding data sheets and specifications, evaluating performance) Experience with signal generators, oscilloscopes, and power supplies Experience with hand and power tools such as drills, grinders, and saws Experience with 3D printers (training on the particular package used will be available) Good understanding of basic concepts of electrical voltage, resistance, capacitance, and current Good understanding of basic concepts of mechanical systems, fabrication, and assembly Experience with computer - aided design software (training on the particular package used will be available) Minimum Qualifications: Ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills Strong communication skills, both oral and written Proficient in Microsoft 365 (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint). Shows initiative to improve lab operations and management Good communication skills to work with multiple team members over a broad range variety of technology development projects Experience with microcontrollers (eg, Arduino) or Raspberry Pi microcomputer Experience in makerspace or fab - lab environment, mission, and operations Experience with advanced electronic test equipment (network analyzer, spectrum analyzer, etc.) Ability to learn new technical skills as necessary to achieve project goals Basic programming skills/concepts - Python or C preferred Software Skills Mechanical CAD Solidworks Electronics CAD Altium Python C/C++ MS Office Suite Git Other Skills Inventory Management Laboratory Organization 3D Printers Mechanical Tools CNC Mills Soldering Basic Electric Concepts Oscilloscopes, DMMs, Function Generators Fabrication and Assembly Makerspace *This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required by this position.To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
