Law enforcement positions are expected to report to their duty station on a daily basis. However, due to COVID-19, some positions in CBP are currently in an expanded telework posture. If selected, and you are given an entrance on duty date you will be provided additional information on the reporting requirements of your position. As a Staff Assistant you will serve as the principal administrative point of contact and advisor for the program office.This position starts at a salary of $61,947.00 (GS-9, Step 1) to $97,430.00 (GS-11, Step 10) with promotion potential to $97,430 (GS-11 Step 10). Typical duties include:Performing a full range of administrative research and analytical duties, a variety of liaison activities, and staff assignments and meeting deadlines related to the mission and functions of the office.Overseeing the management and administrative operations of the office and manages the administrative needs of the executive director, including processing time and attendance and travel coordination.Serving as personal liaison officer for the executive director, meeting with individuals to determine the nature of their requests, providing information, or serving as a source of referral to the proper official of the agency, and speaking authoritatively based on in-depth knowledge of the manager's policies, commitments, and interests. QualificationsExperience: You qualify for the GS-09 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Ensuring that the procedures and administrative control of the office operates smoothly and that details are not overlooked. Gathering data, identifying, and analyzing issues, and recommending solutions to procedural problemsMaking decisions concerning what needs to be done and how it should be accomplished are based on an understanding of the interrelationships between the organization, people, and issues involvedResolving most questions or situations that arise, dealing with emergency situations, and resolving problems where initiative is required in determining appropriate method to use. Education Substitution for GS-9: Successful completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in an accredited college or university, or a JD or LL.B. degree may be substituted for experience at the GS-9 grade level. Such education must demonstrate the skills needed to do the work. A course of study in business administration, public administration, or related fields is qualifying. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. Education Substitution for GS-11: You may substitute a Ph.D. or an equivalent doctoral degree, or three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a qualifying field or an LL.M. for experience at the GS-11 grade level. Such education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Check with your school to determine how many credit hours comprise three years of graduate study. If that information is not available, use 54 semester or 81 quarter hours. Combining Education and Education: To combine your education and experience, you must convert each to a percentage, and then add the percentages. The combined total of your percentage of education and experience must equal at least 100% in order to qualify. If your education is currently described in quarter hours, convert the quarter hours into semester hours by multiplying the quarter hours by the fraction 2/3. To calculate your percentage of graduate education, divide the number of graduate semester hours by 18. To determine your percentage of qualifying experience, you must divide your total number of months of qualifying experience by the required number of months of experience. Add your percentages of education and experience. The two percentages must total at least 100%. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (eg, Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (eg, professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
