A minimum of four (4) years of satisfactorily performing the duties of a locksmith or related craftsperson

Twelve (12) months following the achievement of a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements.

  • A valid District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia motor vehicle operator's permit issued from jurisdiction of residence.

Mission Essential Designation:
  • In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.


Job Levels - At each successive grade level of this job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description.

  • Lays out work assignments, determines methods, techniques and materials needed to effectively accomplish assignments.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and installs a variety of functions and designs of commercial and industrial locking devices including keyed and combination locks.
  • Assists in maintaining a master keyed system. Picks open five-pin through seven-pin, pin-tumbler type locks (Ace, Fort). Performs combinations changes on key and hand-change models, ensuring Authority's consistency and compliance.
  • Performs inspections, repairs, adjustments, testing, troubleshooting and maintenance on assigned exit hardware, door closers, and locks. Observes locking devices, systems and fixtures in operation to detect potential failure or locate causes of malfunctions. Dismantles devices and removes defective parts such as interchangeable core cylinders, special application cylinders and level tumbler locks. Inspects used parts and equipment for changes in calibration, dimensional requirements and manufacturer specifications to improve productivity, and ensure quality and safety standards are met.
  • Completes the required forms, tags, and other documentation that describe maintenance work. Enters data into the Authority maintenance database, and prepares parts requisitions for the supervisor's approval, ensuring equipment, systems and associated mechanical devices are maintained accordingly to improve productivity, quality, and efficiency of operations.
  • Supports response efforts in emergencies by providing immediate maintenance to protect assets. Responds to and provides assistance during severe weather emergencies, ensuring safety requirements are met and exceeded, and delivering an excellent customer service experience and maximizing profitability.

  • Attends the required safety training classes and continuously learns industry best practices for working safely and efficiently. Performs assignments according to established industry and WMATA safety practices and maintenance guidelines.
  • On occasion, will shovel snow and operate snow removal equipment.
