Northrop Grumman is currently seeking an Sr. Principal Engineer Propulsion - Advanced Concepts in our Engineering department for our Elkton, Maryland office. The Northrop Grumman Propulsion Systems and Controls (PS&C) facility in Elkton, Maryland began solid-propellant rocket operations in 1948. Today, the Elkton PS&C facility designs, develops, and produces solid-propellant propulsion and ordnance systems in programs professionally managed for a wide variety of Government and commercial customers. The facility also serves as the hub for offsite engineering and test facilities in Ronkonkoma, NY, Palm Beach Gardens, FL and San Jose, CA. Job Responsibilities: Support efforts to develop and mature solid rocket motor propulsion system programs and internal research and development activities. Support BD with support of new business opportunities via marketing efforts and proposal support. Support efforts with creation of preliminary designs in support of new business opportunities and proposals. Support propulsion and subsystem IPT leads to ensure technical and cost execution of each system component. Check completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, specifications, and accuracy of dimensioning. Investigate pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, contractual specification requirements and cost, and make recommendations for improvement. Document and present design, manufacturing and testing status as needed. Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering & 9 years of experience or Master's Degree in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering & 7 years of experience or a PhD & 4 years of experience Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance, which requires US Citizenship as a pre-requisite Working knowledge of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software Proficient ability to use Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, Power Point, Project) Knowledge of ANSI Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) Knowledge of general machine shop fabrication processes Excellent interpersonal, communication, writing, presentation and critical thinking skills. Ability and willingness to travel to meet with various customers, in both government and industry, and to interface with suppliers. Preferred Qualifications: Current Active Security Clearance Working knowledge of NX Additive manufacturing experience This position falls under a Federal Explosives License issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for this location. Candidates hired into this role will be required to complete and submit an Employee Possessor Questionnaire to ATF for approval to be a possessor Perform analysis, design, or test of one or more moderately complex materials (including energetics), structural components, and control systems for propulsion systems. Apply engineering principles, industry standards, company standards and customer requirements to develop propulsion systems (electric, solid/liquid fuel rocket, air-breathing, thrusters) for application in launch vehicles, missile systems, and space mission systems. Coordinate strategy for developing and leveraging multi-disciplinary design, optimization, and analysis processes to support mission requirements. Define and coordinate the conduct of testing required to evaluate design work. Salary Range: $120,000 USD - $180,000 USD Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
