Specialty Underwriter and Portfolio Manager - Financial Institutions Group

Capital One's Financial Institutions Group (FIG) is an industry specialized group that supports asset managers and originators of commercial and consumer loans. The group has over $14 billion in commitments collateralized by middle market leveraged loans, ABL, SBA loans, commercial equipment leases, subprime auto loans, consumer installment loans, timeshares, residential mortgages, tax liens, and capital call commitments.

FIG has a need for a Manager level Underwriter to join its Lender Finance / Securitization team. The incumbent will provide underwriting and credit management support to cross-functional deal teams in underwriting commercial lender finance transactions, with a particular focus on Leveraged Credit. This includes, but is not limited to, transaction due diligence, collateral analysis, structuring, cash flow modeling, negotiation, approval memo drafting and presentation, legal documentation, and closing. The individual will primarily underwrite new transactions, as well as assist in the restructuring of existing transactions, and consult with team members to manage and monitor portfolio accounts. Our Underwriters andPortfolio Managers balance supporting the Commercial's Bank's growth and ensuring we have a scalable, well-managed business.

As a Manager, you demonstrate subject matter proficiency in credit risk management and are expected to perform responsibilities with support and guidance from senior deal team members.

Primary underwriting responsibilities may include :
  • Assist in due diligence process and calls; evaluate industry research to draw relevant conclusions on material strengths, risks, and mitigants
  • Prepare and review financial models; coordinate with deal team on appropriate structuring options and/or customization of models, including both cash flow analysis and bank rating models
  • Write and prepare all parts of the credit approval document; may review work of less experienced members of the team; begin to take a leadership role in conversations with internal partners
  • Assist in the drafting of term sheets; understand majority of provisions of all credit documents and can provide rationale; begin to comment on legal documents with guidance
  • Assist in overall deal process and communication with internal and external constituents; constructively improve deal process
  • Oversee closing process requirements and draft closing memo
  • Prepare and/or review pricing models independently; understand drivers for pricing model outputs and consider areas for increasing returns
  • Assist in KYC/AML review and approval processes
  • Understand and employ all policies and procedures of the Bank. Remain up-to-date on all bank compliance regulatory policies and procedures and on all pending and proposed regulatory changes affecting bank compliance


Additional Responsibilities may include:
  • Build relationships across function and business to foster collaboration between partner groups
  • Interact directly with customers to cultivate strong relationships while balancing risk and return
  • Mentor and train rotational analysts and new hires
  • Participate in internal initiatives to ensure the business is well-managed and operates efficiently


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or Military Experience
  • At least 3 years of experience in credit underwriting or portfolio management
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA, CFA, or MBA a plus)
  • Completion of formal commercial credit training program
  • At least 5 years of experience in credit underwriting or portfolio management
  • Advanced excel skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate in a concise and clear manner with clients and internally, both orally and in writing
  • At least 1 year of leadership (informal or formal) experience with deal teams or analysts
