Duties

  • You will be responsible for operating and maintaining various types of vehicles, equipment, and containers used to transport cargo over roads and streets through all kinds of traffic between government installations.
  • You will be required, when contacted, to respond to emergency situations, such as but not limited to destructive weather, snow removal and disasters or periods of an increased security threat.
  • You will be required to load, arrange, and secure varied cargo when relative weights, tie-down requirements, and unloading sequence must be considered.
  • You will be responsible for the safe transport of cargo on extended trips.
  • You will be required to occasionally operate light vehicles such as buses, vans, dump trucks, carry-alls, platform trucks, stake trucks, etc.

  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to possess a Class A commercial driver?s license (CDL) with tank, air brake, hazmat and tractor trailer endorsements.
  • You will be required to become CPR and Respirator certified.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver?s license. You will be required to undergo training and possess a license for a 15-ton hydraulic telescoping crane.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION

1) Operating one or more motor vehicles (oversized and/or equipped with more than one body and two braking systems) with a gross vehicle weight of more than 32,000 pounds;
2) Maneuvering oversized vehicles, evaluating conditions and load limits of bridges, in scheduling weigh points, and in assessing traffic conditions and hazards locally and over long distance routes;
3) Backing tractor-trailers and oversized vehicles into loading docks, between other trailers, and in narrow, congested areas, parked aircraft and in constricted areas;
4) Applying a dual braking system especially on steep winding grades to prevent trailer jackknife;
5) Loading, arranging, and securing cargo to prevent overloading and shifting.

This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

This position may require working overtime or on shifts.

Moderate to considerable physical effort is required of the incumbent in this position.
