The physician provider Transcranial Magnetic Simulation (TMS) treatment and manages the TMS clinic. The physician determines parameters for and administers TMS treatment. This includes screening and reviewing consults, evaluating for suitability for treatment, educating the patient/family, obtaining written informed consent, determining cap placement, positioning the helmet, locating anatomical landmarks, finding the motor threshold, communicating treatment parameters and scheduling needs with TMS clinic staff, communicating with referral sources and other providers, monitoring treatment, addressing adverse effects, modifying and terminating treatment as needed, and making aftercare recommendations. The physician documents care in the electronic health record accurately and on time. The physician is highly skilled in the management of patients' mental health needs, with particular emphasis on the evaluation and management of treatment-resistant depression and suicide risk. The physician responds promptly to consult requests in accordance with established policy and procedures. The physician is knowledgeable about Virginia civil commitment law and follows civil commitment procedures. The physician conducts history and physical examinations to include mental status examination, completes intake assessments and suicide risk evaluations, formulates diagnoses, and renders treatment or treatment recommendations as appropriate. The physician orders necessary tests (labs, imaging, studies, etc.). The physician actively participates in collaborative care as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team.

In addition to TMS clinic duties, the physician may carry an assigned clinical workload, such as seeing outpatients in the outpatient clinic setting for longitudinal care and seeing inpatient consults on the medical/surgical units. The physician may be called upon to provide ad hoc or regular cross-coverage for colleagues in inpatient, outpatient, or consultation-liaison settings. The physician writes admission orders and admission history and physical examinations as appropriate. The physician provides psychotherapy and medication management as indicated. The physician delivers care via a variety of modalities including in-person, telehealth, and telephone care. The physician performs psychiatry on-call duties as assigned. The physician performs additional clinical duties as assigned.

Administrative duties may require the physician to perform professional practice evaluations of internal or external staff, to respond to leave requests that may affect clinic operations, and to provide relevant information about performance and conduct to supervisors and management of staff who work in TMS clinic. Basic Requirements:

  • Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency: Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Board Certified in Psychiatry experience administering transcranial magnetic stimulation (especially using the Brainsway device)

Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019. This examination is administered by VA Occupational Health. The physical demands of the work are generally minor. The work is primarily sedentary in nature and usually occurs within climate controlled clinical and administrative settings. Use of fingers may be required to operate computers. There may be occasional light lifting/carrying (15 pounds or less) requirements to relocate boxed materials from one area to another, equipment and room set-up, and ambulation related to physical inspections of the facilities.
